    Installing Compufire

I figured I would start a new thread so it would be easier for future searches for any other users. So I received the compu fire and am looking to install it. I have a some questions. 82Gs850

    1. Looks like the g/w wire from regulator goes to the front of the bike then loops back to the r/w. Do I just by pass this? Do not use it any longer?

    2. I read people adding heavier gauge wire some where in a thread. Do I need to do any additional wiring? Swap out wiring going to Stator? Will the old wires over heat or melt? Can I just use the existing wires and add the new connector?

    3. Any ideas on how to install this under the batter box I see it is bigger and the existing bolts do no line up.

    1 - read this - http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...14#post1910714

2 - IMHO, no need to size up the OEM wiring even though it look tiny compared to Compufite wiring

3 -anywhere it will fit. Most like will need to drill at least one hole.

1983 GS750E - bought in 2016 as a rough runner to use while rebuilding 81L and then to combine with ES to make one good one
1983 GS750ES - bought in Toronto in 2015 on a lark as a non-runner, missing front cowling and exhaust - If you have a 1983 750ES front cowling let me know! Blue would be nice

Without proper use of Search features, your thread will be lost with all the other Compufire threads.

I used the supplied fuse holder as the connection to the OEM red wire (here it is before installation into the fuse holder)

I see so you ran the positive from compufire to the red wire on the bike. The neg to the frame. Now how did you remove the compu fire wire out of the fuse holder? It comes with a wire installed in it that is supposed to go to battery on harley?

Wanted to but no good place on my 1981 GS750L so I just ran to batt neg since the engine ground goes there. Really better to put it on the frame and then frame to battery. Rear master brake cylinder bolt would be an option.

Small screwdriver down the back opening (on the flat side of the internal connector) Releases a little tab in there

Not sure on the Harley but you can use this pigtail as designed by plugging into fuse holder and then connecting that pigtail to the OEM red. (*) I wanted to eliminate this second connection so I used the fuse holder as the connection. Also I shortened the Compufire red wire since it was so long by un-crimping the supplied connector, shortening the wire and re-crimping / reinstalling.

*(You want to go to OEM red rather than battery. Something about the current running stator>bike with excess to battery rather than all current through battery)

Thank you so much for the assistance. I have it all installed under battery box and it is working perfectly.
