    What igniter to choose

    Hello!
I am brand new here, so I would like to say thank you in advanced :-)

I recently bought a GS450 project, two engines, one frame and one wiring harness.
The old owner gave up, so I am starting where he left of. He said he got a new(used) wiring harness.
The papers state that the bike is from 83, but in Denmark the papers only state when it was first registered, so it could be a 82.
I am missing an igniter, and don't know witch one to get, I have seen metal model and a black plastic model. My wiring harness will only fit the black plastic connector, but I don't know if the wiring harness is the same year as my engine. Any way of identifying the year from the engine?
    Thanks!

You first need to check whether your engine has a mechanical advance behind the pickups. The 1982 used mechanical advance and thus an Igniter. The 1983 models did not have a mechanical advance and used a TCI which has the advance built in electronically.

If you have a mechanical advance, then a Dyna-S from the USA found on ebay for about $120 works very well. Search for a thread by Pete on his 450 build in this forum.

Seeing you are in Denmark, you may want to look at an aftermarket unit from Ignitech in the Czech Republic if you need a TCI. They have programmable and pre-programmed units.

        Yes, behind the signal generators.

Please take some time and look though the parts fishe for info on the differences..http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm

Alpha sports references US sold bikes, but Suzuki sold the same bikes world wide, with only minor differences.

I will have a look through those lists to see what model i have, thank you!

I also have some new info, i found out that the two engines aren't the same, one is a GS450 and one is a GS40X, is there any major difference with those ?
          Thanks!

Also, will a frame vin-number or engine vin-number help identifying ?

Does the cable run from the engine directly into the ignitor ?
Because then i can look at the connector on the wiring harness on the engine

If you remove the round cover on the right hand side of the engine you should see the two pickups. The mechanical advance unit is located behind them if you look carefully.
There is a cable coming in from the Igniter on the bottom. Try and twist the rotor, if it twists in one direction and snaps back you have mechanical advance. If not then you have a TCI.
Have you noted the part number on your existing ignition unit and compared to the part numbers at the site Nessism referred you to?

Have a read here, its a 550, but will show you what you need to know: http://www.mediafire.com/download/ii..._Pictorial.pdf

Okay, so i have new information in the case:
As far as i can see, it is a 83 or newer model. I cant twist anything.

                  .

So my new question is, will i be able to use this igniter?:

If not, will the Dyna-s kit work for my bike ?

The pictures show that it is a 1983 model or later engine you have.
The part 32900-47020 is the Ignitor for a GS450 1980-1982 and will not work on your bike. Thus the Dyna-S will not work either. Both of these make use of the mechanical advance that your model does not have.

You need part 32900-44420 which is for a GS450 1983-1988. This is actually a TCI and has the advance map built in.

                    Keep well.
