The theory went something like this: because the ES stator produced more output, there was more shunting to ground (heat to the stator), which in turn caused the stators to prematurely croak. Since the series R/R (SH775) doesn't shunt to ground, the extra output doesn't create the same heat problem which should keep the ES stator from croaking early.
ES does apparently use different suppliers to produce stators and some models seem to have less than the best workmanship. At least that has been the complaints. Not sure if it has lead to any failures unless there was obvious interference on installation. In my experience, the GS1100e stators have always seemed to be of high quality and certainly worth the possible workmanship risks for the increased low RPM power gains(when using Series R/R's).

Just another thought to throw out there: $195 is a hell of a lot of money to just have a stator re-wound.

Isn't there anyone in Canada who can re-wind stators? I know there are a couple of other sources to have stators re-wound here in the states for much more reasonable amounts of money ($60 to $100 is what I've seen).

Besides, a 12-pole stator is going to be a lot easier to re-wind than an 18 pole stator.

        I'm curious

Is it possible to update the 1979 to 1980/1981 spec by changing out the rotor as well?

"However, you can switch a 1979 GS850 to an 18 pole stator if you also switch to the rotor from a 1980-83 GS850G/GL. (The stator cover is the same.) Of course, I'd also upgrade the regulator/rectifier, inspect/clean/repair all the wiring, and install an electronic ignition as well."

            That would be my preference.

I got my Polaris SH775 from Partzilla. The price was a little higher, but the cost pretty much evened out with shipping costs to Point Roberts. On top of that, I wasn't familiar with the Polarisparts site, and I've dealt with Partzilla (formerly PowerSports Plus) a few times over the last couple of years.

I'd check with a local Polaris dealer, Rob. They can probably get pretty close on price, and you wouldn't have to pay for shipping (normally)

Just for perspective on the ridiculosity of Rick's pricing, I looked up a new OEM stator from Suzuki and it's $232 (you could likely find it a wee bit cheaper), and no faffing around with core charges.

Of course, that's a US site -- no idea what Canadian suppliers charge for Suzuki bits. Might be worth checking with Z1, as they can obtain Suzuki OEM bits and have plenty of experience with cross-border shipping.

Yeah, I have had good luck with used ebay ones- currently running a 1982 one with the SH-775. I've seen plenty of 12 pole units in the past- just avoid the BBQ looking ones.
