1981 GS650 Mechanical Advancer Rotor Pin

Was attempting to install a Dyna Ignition, when i removed the Mechanical advance, i noticed there was a small pin on the crankshaft that should engage the Advance that was sheared off. does this require an entire replacement of the crank? or can this part be replaced?

Here's a pic of backside of advancer- that slot in hub engages some kind of pin on crank (likely pressed in) BUT I haven't explored this feature (and hope never to)- does your advancer look like this?

Yes, it looks exactly like that. and the pin that seems to have snapped off, is the one that engages the advance, in the slot you see on the back. I was hoping there was a fix, without having to replace the entire crankshaft.

this is where you proceed cautiously. the pin is HARD METAL and so is the crank.

dremmel tool with a disc to make a flat spot to center punch the pin.

get a couple expensive super hard drill bits - brand new never used.

start with a tiny drill bit perfectly center and begin to remove material from the center out.

it does not have to be surgical but when one of the drill bits start to really cut the pin will release -they are not in there that tight - if not -

Any idea if it is possible to buy another pin?

I imagine there's little to no room to get a drill chuck that close to attack old pin, so you are going to get creative- how did it break ?-confess!

If you get old one out, note hole size in crank and get pin maybe .005 inch bigger- probably have to customize length

I honestly have no idea how it broke, this is a bike that i was going to purchase from a guy. He was going to install the Dyna ignition before, to ensure the bike was running properly. Upon removing the signal generator and Mechanical advance, this is what we discovered.
Also, to install the dyna ignition, the signal generator and the CDI unit are no longer used, correct? do you need to run wires directly from the coils to the Dyna?

The Dyna setup replaces both the signal coils and the the ignitor (it's not a CDI); yeah, you need to run wires to ignition coils- I'm not sure if you can cannabilize existing wires, but the Dyna instructions should be clear.

That old ignitor is worth some bucks if it works, so don't junk it.
