    Question on 2 Wires - 1980 GS1000 GLT

So putting the electronics back in the bike I was confused by 2 wires. Couldn't seem to find where they connect. I went to Bike Cliff's website and got the diagram (THANK YOU btw), and noticed that they aren't hooked up to anything on the diagram.

They are the W/G and W/R that run into the Right Handle Bar switch.

What are these to wires and what do they do? Or should I not even worry about the at all.

    Thanks.

Ahh, the ol deadly stator wire loop.

Look closely at the wiring diagram and you will see one leg of the stator traveling up to the hand control switch, then returning back down to the R/R. This routing is a hangover from the days of headlamp switches. The idea was to disconnect one phase of the charging system when the headlamp was switched off. Since the US market went "full on" with the headlamp, that wire routing is needless, and even damaging. Resistance builds up on the connectors, which adds heat. It's quite common to find the harness melted down along these wires which is why it's imperative to reroute the charging system.

Wire the stator directly into the R/R, bypassing the factory harness. You can just leave the extra wires loose in the harness - no worry. Also, improve the factory R/R grounds since they are woefully inadequate from the factory. This is one of the most important things you can do for your bike (other than valve adjust).

    Enjoy!

My 750L is a 1980 and has the headlight switch. Did they eliminate this on the 1000? The switch is on the left hand side near the turn signal switch.

Already did the the valve adjust, learning from this site.

Thank you for the information. Looking at the diagram, isn't the R/R already ran straight into the Stator?

        Thanks.

Which diagram are you looking at? This is the one that's accurate for my '80 GS850GL: http://members.dslextreme.com/users/..._color-new.png

You'll see two legs of the stator go to the RR, but one travels up through the harness to a connector under the fuel tank and then does a 180 back into the harness and then finally to the RR. To bypass this extra length of wire, just plug the wire from the stator to the wire going into the RR. The wire colors don't match but the connectors do, so there's no crimping, splicing, or soldering to worry about.

            Thanks.

It looks like it is a redrawn schematic with a member here indicating the standard modification.

I am using the diagram from Bike Cliff's website. The color one. It matches my bike pretty much on everything. Just to make sure I am thinking it hooked it to the stator; it is the wire loom that comes from the left side of the bike through the starter area... 2 of the 3 colors match. But on the diagram it is showing the difference also.

Here is the link to the diagram...

              Thanks again for the help.

Ok that makes sense now. So I "should" be good to go.

Thanks again for all the quick responses.
