1980 gs750L with electric advance question

The coil wires were cracked and broken and found a good set of Dyna coils on eBay (3ohm) they were a good price and came with dynaS pickup and mechanical advance plate that came off a gs750 unknown year (pic posted in next post)

I reposted my questions with pictures in Post #5...sorry for premature post.

I called it a plate but this is the mecanical advance parts I have that came with the ignition.

I vote for #1 ! just try the 3 ohm coils with your existing ignition setup. Get it running and then see if the dyna setup works. avoid trying #3
What's wrong with the stock ignition setup (other than coils)?

It actually runs as is...but I have tons of tape on plug wires and was looking for excuse to improve so I bought the coils...I have the pickup which id like to use if better. I also tend to lean toward mechanical for reliability sake and if I could get rid of black box. But if stock is acceptable then ill stick with it if no other advantage? Any other opinions?

Ok I'm an idiot! I posted before not gathering all the information and assuming.

I posted after taking the outer cover off but not looking under the pickups and not seeing my mechanical advance behind it.

This is me, (the mechanics are gummed up and aren't free but I can probably clean them up.)

This is what I have to install with my 3 ohm Coils

Let me rephrase my questions now.
          1. Can I use the 3Ohm coils with the stock pickup?
          2. Any advantage to using the dynatek pickup over the Stock (other than adjusting the timing further.
          3. The instructions for installation that I downloaded from Dynatek show direct wiring to coils...(stock goes through the black box). Since I have the black box can I bypass it with the dynatek and is there an advantage other than eliminating it?
BTW what is the actual purpose of the Black box because I assumed it adjusted the timing based on RPM now I see the mechanical advance behind it.

The Dyna S is a stand alone ignition system. None of the stock ignition components can be used if you are going to use the Dyna. The two systems are in no way compatible. The Dyna does require the mechanical advance is installed. The stock ignition module (black box) MUST be removed from the bike and discarded if the dyna is to be used.

Performance wise, there is no difference between the stock ignition and the
Dyna. From a durability perspective, its a crap shoot. I've seen both stock and Dyna systems last forever or take a dump in a week. LOL

I would swap out the coils and leave it at that. There is nothing to be gained by swapping out the ignition system unless it is not working properly. You can use either the 3 ohm coils or the 5 ohm coils. Either will be fine.

Thanks...Because I'm building/thinning down the wiring harness I went completely with dynaS (and saved black box and pickup for backup) it timed great and runs great!

              Thanks for the help yall!

                Actually...

The Dyna S will function perfectly with the stock coils, which are rated 3-5 ohms, and usually measure toward the lower end of this scale. Of course you can switch to the Dyna coils if you would rather but I agree with Earl that it's not much of an upgrade.

You can leave the stock ignitor box in place on the bike, or remove it. Doesn't matter. Once the stock Signal Generators are removed the ignitor will be inoperative. The Dyna ignition will have to be spliced into the circuit and will take over the ignition control duties thereafter. No real benefit in swapping though as long as the stock system is working correctly.

so.... just to clarify (as mine is all stock ignition components except the pickups(?) (the part that works with the timing advance unit)) a dyna s can be installed per their instructions with no other modification to the ignition system?

Assuming you wired the Dyna S per the instructions, that's all you need to do. The ignitor can be removed, but I'm not sure if that's strictly necessary.
