    weak spark

I have a 82 gs750t. My bike will not start. I pulled a spark plug and I had a really weak spark. It was orange not white/blue. I checked the coils. My first reading is 4 ohm and second is 11k ohms. From what I have read on other forms this is correct. I have 12 volts at the coils. The battery is only one week old. The bike started up fine the first couple of days after getting the new battery. Could it be a ignitor unit? What are your guys thoughts?

4 ohms primary and 11 kohms secondary says your coils are good. How about your plug caps ? try removing and cutting 1/4inch off plug wire and reassemble.
12 volts at coils with key on, but what happens to this voltage when you crank it ? below 11 gives some ignitors fits.

Of course, after installing new battery, you did test your charging system??

+1, If it ran well with a new battery and not a few days later, check the charging system.

I didn't get a chance to check the charging system. I was in the process of tuning my carbs to get my bike to run correctly. Is there a chance a faulty charging system killed my battery? What should I do now?

My voltage at the coils drops down to 8 when I try to start the bike.

              Do the coil relay mod.

Would the coil relay mod deal with my staying problem?

Fully charge your battery, do the charging tests -at least a quickee- bike doesn't have to run smoothly, but it has to be running!

report your results. I haven't done the coil relay mod myself- my ignitor seems to tolerate low voltage during cranking but some ignitors don't apparently.

My 81 GS750E would start very quickly if the battery had any charge. Do a quick test and the go through the grounds and clean up the fusebox. Most likely you need to change out the R/R. In 81 they had R/R's that could overcharge pretty easily.

In the end my 750 never needed a coil relay mod. Not saying it is bad, just deal with real source of your problems in the charging.

I went out side to try to start my bike to do the charging test. But my bike won't start. The battery is at 12.10 volts. I put the battery on my tinder. Do you guys have any ideas on how to get the bike to start?

My bike won't start with 12.1 volt battery either ,cuz that's a dead battery !- fully charged battery is about 12.7 volts- so let the tender do its thing.

                          Won't crank or wont start?

You don't need to have a running bike to do the first part of the Quick Test.

Also you will be waiting a very long time to get your battery charged up using a trickle charger.

It cranks. But won't start. I will let you guys know my readings after the battery is charged.

If it cranks then the battery maybe down but not dead.
