    '85 gs550 Ignitor Issues

Alright lady's and gents, I've been going threw some issues with my 550 ignitor kicking the bucket. And like a few of you guys out there start panicking when you see what the dealer wants for them. For me that would be $682! I don't know about you guys but that's just too dam much.

So I've been doing some digging and found an interesting set up that is called the "maxi-dwell II" According to there propaganda "Nominated for MTA'S 1976 excellence award for product development "

Pretty much what this salesmen is trying to tell me is all i have to do is find a mechanical advancer from a pre '80's 550 bolt this on run two wires from the coils to the pick ups and BAM! I've got a running bike for about $150. They also make these for the GS's all the way up to 1150's. Im about 90% ready to pull the trigger on this and just wanted to see if you guys have had any experince with these systems or if your in the same boat maybe i could help ya.

the crank trigger without the ignitor will not fire the coils.
change the advancer from an electornic to a mechanical will not help.
and welcome to the 83-86 550 bad ignitor club.
750 and 1150 ignitor's will plug right into your harness but WILL NOT WORK.
    good luck!

your bike takes a really small trigger plate or else you could install a dynaS.
so these guys says points are better than an electronic ignition....LOL
      OH,
THEY DO NOT OFFER A SYSTEM FOR YOUR BIKE...
BELOW IS A SEARCH I DID.
This part is not compatible with 1985 Suzuki GS550ESF -

I guess you could count me in your club as well, since I am pretty sure the ignition is shot on my bike too.

There are two solutions for the person willing to do some retro fitting and basic wiring.
I wired up a gm hei ignition module with a mechanical advance unit. Slotted my ignition plate to accomodate for timing. Fired it up and was happy. I ended up finding a good used working unit and swapped that onto my bike.

If you search out spyug's threads, he was successful in using a stock gs ignitor. Worth a look.

Holy cow I didn't know my igniter I have no use for was worth so much? I will see if I can find it, dig her up. Came off an 85 550l I scrapped. The bike had 3k miles only on it.

Haha ya that's the only thing I use on eBay. The real kicker is the turd sent me a "tracking number" saying he was going to express it. Half of me wants to keep it if it does show up. Haha but I know I wouldn't

I have found that sellers will send a pre ship form to shippers, which gives them a track number to give to buyers. Its how they get around the whole, shipped in a certain amount of days requirement. sucks

Well small update. Got the long awaited ignitor I ordered a month ago from eBay. Haha the temptation to keep it is almost overwhelming. Especially when I already got my money back and its now a FREE part.
