Anyone ever replace ignition coil pickups ?

Hello, I have a 1987 suzuki gs 450 L. After some testing, I have what I believe are bad ignition coil pick ups. I get no ohm readings at the connector. Anyhow, if I replace it. Does timing need to be reset ? I dont know if my particular model is suppose to or not. But, the advance will not turn by hand. Bike ran great up until a few months ago. I get absolutely no spark. I replaced main coils with new, tested starter removed from bike, new plugs, new solenoid, cleaned start switch contacts, cleaned all battery contacts, good battery and the bike wont spark. I believe Im down to the CDI and coil pick ups. I strongly feel its the pick ups being I get no ohm readings at the connector. Need to know if timing needs to be reset if I replace them and where is engine ground on my bike ? Any other suggestions, Id be thankful.

"......I replaced main coils with new,"

was this because you had no spark or some kind of upgrade?
How do these new coils compare OHM wise to originals?
Your advance is built in to ignitor box, there is no mechanical advancer that you can wiggle!

Have you checked for positive power at coils -probably a orange/white wire, but I'm not sure.
As to ohms at signal generators, how many wires lead out of them? Is your meter OK?

I replaced the main coils with new because I has a set I was going to put on another bike. So, put them on as reaassurance. But, the no spark issue remains. The old coils on this bike tested fine with an ohm meter. Yes, my meter works like it should. My signal generator has 4 leads. 2 green/yellow, 1 black, 1 brown. I forgot to check main coils connector coming off thw main harness. I only checked the ohm resistance at the main coil terminals. I got 3.9 ohms on both old coils. That should be about right for a small 2 cylinder. Does the timing have to be reset if I install a new signal generator? I think I can avoid resetting the timing if I dont remove the complete plate. Only the pickups. But, not sure of that exactly ?

I see member "pete" is on now- a 450 owner. He should spot this thread and offer advice.

Edit; pete vanished. there is a little adjustment in plate if you loosen screws-not much maybe plus/minus 5 degrees

I have nothing to offer on the 450. All I can tell you is the 850 ignition pickups are wired in series and present a static resistance of ~300 ohms. Yours probably aren't and don't.

However, when it comes to replacing the p/u plate there's a little adjustment provided, as even the factory don't know exactly where the spark will be, so yes, you'd have to re-time it for accuracy.
