83 gs650gl governor assembly spring

    single guy ,two daughters !

    Finding springs is very challenging!
    I checked my old spare governor; the wire thickness is 1mm, the outer diameter of wound part is likely 5.5 mm. The eye center to eye center is 15mm; material is music wire not stainless. A little variation is probably OK, by 4k the spring is fully extended and hits stop.

        Hmm, that's a interesting problem- I'd look for someone who's not in a hurry to vacuum!

          For the time being this will have to work !! Spring with hook broken off , repaired by bending up one loop and made a new hook and just to keep things the same I removed the spring that was still good and did the same ... hopefully I can come to a better salution over the weekend !!!

            That will not work as it will put more tension on the spring and not allow the advancer to move when it is suppose to. Possibly not allowing the bike to accelerate my guess above like 4500rpm and up. It will act like a stuck or frozen advancer.

              Interesting. I didn't know that GS that new had a mechanical advance. Those springs control the curve, so they are a big deal. On Nortons, the slots where the pins on the weights go wear little notches, and the advance hangs up before it gets to full retard. Its the big reason to go with an electronic ignition. The points aren't a problem.

              Yours is the very first time I heard of a GS mechanical advance problem.

                  Given that it's basically a car advance system in there, I'd not be surprised if Suzuki bought in the advance assembly from a Japanese ignition maker and furthermore I'd be even less surprised if the springs are common with some model of Japanese car of that era.
                  You might even find suitable springs via a car tuning shop if you find a place (physically or online) that has a clue and specialised in older tin.

                    Well bikes all back together . No leaks with the new valve cover . And shortening both springs by one hoop didnt effect acceleration what so ever !! Adjusted idle mixture screws and the bike is accelerating better then the bike has ever accelerated the yr and a half I have owned the bike .. seems ok until I kind find the proper replacement springs ..

                      Just got in from a 3 hr ride and didnt have one single problem , while replacing the valve cover gasket I moved around a few shims and replaced 2 , no oil leaks so far .. knock on wood ! & as for those springs they seamed to have passed the test for a temporary repair ... just have to seal up a couple small leaks in the exhaust , and it should do to keep me riding and free up my time so I can get working on the gs1000 ... again thx to you all for your continued ideas and knowledge in assisting me rectify some ongoing issues with this 650 .. Tom an extra thx goes out to you !!

                        Watch out- this thing might grow on you! By shortenning the advance springs, the timing takes a little longer to reach full advance- no biggie apparently. I'd still look for a pair of close to new ones, or just be honest when you sell it! got to free up some living room space!

                          And as for room in the livingroom ? Theres lots more room !! Hahaha just picked up this 1974 garelli scooter . Peddel pull the clutch and go , the kids arr going to have fun on this little bike !! Picked it up for free !!!
