Any differences in 79-83 stator?
Is the any physical differences in stator between those years. I bought a 79 - 84 From eBay but doesn't seem to be working. Wondering in they are year specific.Tags: None

A 79 GS850 stator will not work on a 1981. The 79 has the wrong number of poles. You need a stator from 1980 up to 1983.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Yes, although you could say 1980 up, since it was sold overseas for much longer than it was in the states.
The early model had a 12 pole stator, later models had an 18 pole stator. But it was smaller in diameter than other large displacement GS models, so the other stators will not fit.
Count the number of poles on the stator you have, or even post a picture and we can do it for you.

Dam it, I feel like an idiot. Truth is he use to partner half of the local Honda shop here in Stratford Ontario he was the wrench half. He brought up the extra poles a couple of times with me. I said I didn't think it would make a If the diameter was the same which I was assuming it was.i guess the next stator is on me.

It sounds like you have the correct one. Either you have a bad one, or the problem is elsewhere. There is a lot that needs to be done to assure charging health than changing out the stator and R/R. Usually, there are visibly overheated connectors in the system and bad grounds that contributed to the failure in the first place. You need to run the stator papers to troubleshoot this issue. Find a post by posplayr and look in his signature for a link to a quick test.

Read the stator papers over, checked all connections. The stator is failing all by itself. No connections to be bad 20v ac at 5k rpms. Voltage coming from regulator is good, disconnected it goes upto 14v until 3500 rpm then drops radically, hooked up to the battery (brand new) we can barely get 12.5v when we rev it up. We took apart a couple other engines we have lying around and did a comparison Between the magnets . The suzuki one seemed a little weaker Compared to the Honda rotor.

If you only get 20 volts AC stator lead to stator lead during the AC test (stator disconnected from R/R), your ebay stator is no good. The R/R can't do much of anything unless stator feeds it properly.
