    charging

    Hi all,
    I think I need some help, my 82 gsx 400 is not charging properly. Can
    anyone point me in the right direction? Where should I start first, the battery or charging system. I'm ok with spanners but a bit slow with electrics so please keep it simple.

      Electrics are not so bad.

      As long as you are not working with a hacked up wiring harness, and all the bits and pieces are there, then you ought to be able to figure out the source of your electrical woes, and solve the problem.

      You really do need to just take a step back, a deep breath, and go at it step by step.

      Just remember to have a wiring diagram on hand, and label anything you disconnect so you can easily find your way back. The stock wiring loom is quite nice on these bikes, v.v. colour coding, but you never know when a P.O. may have changed some wiring.

        Thanks for the advice, I have printed off a copy of the charging circuit testing procedure, it looks quite straight forward and well explained so will work my way through tonight.

            Hi to all, have worked my way through the stator papers and after testing the stator it looks like one of the coils is fried so need a replacement. Does anyone know if any other models are intrechangable as the 400 t are
            difficult to find and quite expensive. I have found a site with one to fit a GS 500 at a reasonable price. Any advice?

              Interesting that you mention the cost of coils. I never thought the ones available were all that expensive, but recently a couple of people had mentioned the same as you, so I looked at a few online vendors, and the prices have over-doubled from what I recall a couple of years ago. BAd memory or real increase...same difference.

              Pete (member name) and others with 400s will point you in the right direction, but Dynatek produces nice set of aftermarket coils (~130 USD) that won't break the bank.

              I'd bet someone on here has one they could sell you if you post in the Parts Wanted forum.

                  Yes. Sorry I missed the "stator" coil bit. Still early enough here that the coffee hasn't touched lips.

                  Steve's rewinds are probably the best deal going on stator replacements.

                      Yup. That's what I plan on doing when I replace the plug wires on the Kat. Screw digging out glue on a 26 year old pair of coils. I'll be using Z1 as well as they give excellent advice whenever I phone....

                        Surely there is something a little more "local"?

                        OK, I just checked, the cost of shipping to the UK is just about $25. I sell stators for $85, which includes about $5 shipping, so will just add the stator cost of $80 and the shipping and call it $105.

                          Hi all,
                          Thanks for all the reply's and advice. I have managed to find new
                          one for a GS500 which has the same dimensions, its on a Chinese site
                          alixpress and less then £40.00. I am thinking of taking a chance and
                          trying one out. Anyone know if the specification for the GS500 will
                          be the same ie voltage?

                            There are very few stator differences in all the years and models of GS bikes. Basically, it comes down to two physical sizes and the difference in the number of poles. There might have been some diffeences in the actual connectors on the ends of the wires, but those are easy to adapt. All of the electrical specs are pretty much the same.

                            Good luck with the Chinese stator.

                              At the current exchange rate, Steve's works out to about $63 GBP with shipping... not too much more than what you'd pay for the Chinese part. I'm not saying the Chinese version is a subpar product, but personally I 'd be more confident in the item Steve has to offer.

                              Still, 23 quid is 23 quid, and if you are on a tight budget, the Chinese-sourced stator may work well enough for you.
