    Yamaha r/r

Been working on a guy's 1983 Yamaha Venture for quite a while. Thought I was done, but looks like r/r is bad. Does anyone know if the sh775 would work on this bike? By the way Yamaha put the r/r right above the muffler, think I might try to relocate the new one. terrylee

If the Yamaha has the same type system with permanent magnets and shunting the excess to ground it should work fine.

I know there's a Venture forum out there with guys who know more about it.

I'll go on a "L"imb and guess it's a field regulated alternator- i.e. brushes and slip rings. The R/R would then have two extra smallish wires feeding the field on the alternator. If so, suspect the brushes especially if the R/R appears to be a Shindengen which yamaha used frequently.

Hang on, Tom, I'm getting ready to cut that limb down.

My son's previous '83 Venture and his current '86 Venture Royale both have permanent magnet and stator systems, just like the GS.

The Polaris regulator should work just fine.

My '82 Seca does not have brushes, according to the wiring diagram I have.

Thanks guys, thought it might have same stator (has three white wires). Going to double check tests, but everything points to bad r/r. terrylee

It was a short fall. Hopefully, this yamaha stator is larger than the suzuki's, so the SH-775 will get to do more work

                more venture r/r questions

Ok, Have couple of spare r/r was going to try on Yamaha venture, just to make sure this is the problem before ordering sh775. The wiring on the venture has two red positive wires, two black negative wires, and brown sense(?) wire, from one plug. And three white wires in separate plug. Just wanted to make sure I could combine positives together, negatives together, and not worry about the sense wire? terrylee

Thanks, been on that site but didn't see those. Looks like be ok on hooking reds together and blacks together, looks like they join together right after leaving plug. But not sure about brown wire. Looks to go to fuse box, ignition switch. Maybe it's not a sense wire after all? terrrylee

Why are we discussing a Yami r/r issue here? Got an "Other Bikes" forum for that, right? Just sayin'

Sorry just trying to get alittle advise for a bike I'm working on as a favor to someone without having to join another forum. Don't want to feel like a traitor! Thought since some folks have more than one kind of bike (or have had) might have some thoughts. Didn't mean to upset anyone! terrylee

50/50. It was electrical and concerning the SH-775 so I won't turn you in to the politically correct police. Besides I had a XJ700X so my second choice is Yamaha, still kicking myself for getting rid of my DT250.
