New 1980 GS 850G Coil Confusion

In another thread with the help of the forum members the year of manufacture of my bike was established. It is now time to order some parts. After removing the gas tank i saw one of the coils was cracked and that could be one of the reasons the bike sometimes does not run like it should. And I think it would be a good idea to upgrade them.
I was looking through the manual that I downloaded from Bass Cliff's website and the coil information left me confused... On section 12-2 it said the coils were 4 ohm primary and 15K ohm secondary. Then in section 14-11 it said primary approximately 3-5 ohms secondary 31-33K ohms. What value should I order? Then I read this on Z-!'s site "Never select a coil with a lower resistance than your ignition system - this will cause the coils to overheat and burn out"
    Kinda confused here...
    Thanks, Kevin

Dyna green 3 ohm coils are the aftermarket coil of choice around here. Accel also makes 3 ohm coils that work fine on GS bikes.

Coils from any other four cylinder GS will work, although the mounting holes on some of them won't match up exactly.

Section 12 covers the electrical system for the 1979 GS850 which has a points-based ignition system, section 14 is the addendum for the 1980 GS850 which has an electronic ignition.

        Order Up

Thanks for the advise. I ordered the Dyna green 3 ohm coils today. I will see if that cracked coil was the problem with the bike occasionally bogging down. If it still does then I will put the petcock in the full on flood bowl position to see if the petcock is an issue. I did take it apart and may have buggered it up in that exercise.

i mounted my 3 ohms green dyna coils today. Man what a difference. I just wish I would have bought them before. Great Upgrade on my 850 GS. I also have Dyna S ignition and its just a different bike.
