DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hopefully a stupid question.

I have two bike I am working on, a 650e and an 850l. I put a freash battery in checked the lights( which worked fine), then when I hit the starter button nothing. This happen on both bikes. What did I do wrong?

Sorry if it is really a stupid question...

Did you pull the clutch lever in? There's a safety switch on there....

The really stupid ones are the ones you don't ask. If I had a penny for every...........

I thought just having it in Neutral would do it. I will try the clutch in the morning.

do you have a run button is it in the run position, or the off position ?

.

Yes, the clutch must be pulled in and the ignition power (right hand control) switch must be turned on before the start button will do anything.

OK i tried it with the clutch pulled. still nothing. I am not used to doing that on my Wing.

Do you hear a click when you push the starter button? Are these bikes you are getting running or did the starter stop working?

No clicking sound. These are new bikes to me. Trying to rebuild and get them running.

Pull the schematics and bypass the clutch safety switch located on the left handlebar controls (Yellow/Green wires) in the headlight housing. You can just plug them together. Make sure the start/stop switch on the right handlebar is set to the start position and press the start button. If not starter turning then check for voltage along the way and see if you have 12V at each point. Make sure the key is on.

The voltage path originates at the fuse box (10 amp fuse), then passes through the right hand controls (input Orange/White wire) to the On/Off Emergency Stop switch (in right hand control) then to the Push Button Start switch (in right hand control), out (Yellow/Green wire), into headlight bucket, through the clutch safety switch (Yellow/Green in left hand control) and back to the headlight bucket (this is what you're bypassing) and finally to the starter solenoid (Yellow/Green wire).

It's possible that one or more of the switches are bad but less likely that they're bad the same way on both bikes. Might also be that a connector is disconnected or burnt. You can get the schematics for your bikes here: Bikecliff's Web Site.

What year are the bikes?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I work nights, I will have to have to break out my chiefs apron and start going through the spaghetti they call wiring. the bikes are 82 and 83.

This is the board behind the start button after I cleaned it with a stainless tooth brush. It had oxidized so badly that it wouldn't make contact. Mine sat for 11 years and acted just like you're description. The small copper contact behind the button was just as bad.

I will start with this first since both bikes have been sitting since 2005.

Thanks for the pics. They help.

If you find that to be the problem, you should use a little antioxidant after you clean them. Noalox is good but even ChapStick will work, just to help the contacts stay clean longer.
Good luck

Well I cleaned to points of contact and tried it. No go, I also was holding it my hand when I did it. Then dropped the little copper piece that is held by the spring. Now just have to get it out of the engine.... smallest space. Then will try again after putting it back together.

If you didn't bypass it, be aware that the guts of the clutch safety switch (under the clutch lever) can get dirty like that too and fail to make contact.

That switch also needs to be adjusted properly to make contact... and it has a little spring, etc. to lose.

A good tip when taking these apart is to wrap a plastic baggie around the whole assembly, stick a screwdriver through the baggie to take it apart. That way the little spring will not end up in neverfindland. Had the same problem with mine and had to clean all the contacts. There was something about the way I put it back together the first time. I had it reversed and it did not work. Went back in and realized that I had reversed the contact point.

Well I took the contact point off of my other bike and cleaned it up. Put it on one of the bikes and it worked. Just cleaning it up did the trick. Now I have to figure out an easy way to clean the carbs so I can start it.
