    Trouble Starting GS750

    Hey Guys,

I am having a hard time getting my 750 to start. It starts on the 3rd kick and run for 10 seconds then it dies out. After that I can't get the bike to start again for the rest of the night. Any ideas?

I have cleaned the carbs, set the points, checked the valves (two intakes a one size too tight), replaced the regulator and rectifier with an Electrosport Reg/Rec (removing the white/red white/green wires). Compression is good. I get spark? and plugs are wet. Not sure what the problem is.

Check your vacuum line to the petcock. Mine came disconnected and had similar symptoms.

Was the bike running before you did all this work?

Yeah bike started and was running no problems. I checked and the vacuum is still attached.

I've read that the petcocks can go bad too. I have no idea how to tell you to check it though.... It's worth double checking the carbs even though you cleaned them....floats, jet settings, etc.

Thanks Knotscott, the petcock flows freely on prime, which is how I have been starting the bike. Yesterday I tried again. The bike started and ran for 60 seconds on full choke. Then died. Started up again and ran for 30 seconds then died. I check the plugs. Cylinder 1 was wet. 2 had carbon 3 was fine and 4 had carbon so I adjusted the fuel screw a bit. Tried the bike again. Started ran for 10 seconds then died and that was all i got out of her for the day.

I did remove my starter motor relay and replaced the original reg and rec with a reg/rec from electro sport. So I had a few extra wires i just left open.

I am thinking its an electrical problem but not sure where to start. I want to get new Dyna coils but not until I know the bike is running and worth the investment

Read gs stator in my signature you would have been well advised to not buy the electro sport r/r.

If the bike runs can you do a quick test? See my sig again .

If not can you draw a picture of where you connected the red and black wires from the r/r . I assume from the pic the stator yellow are straight to the r/r.

If you keep the r/r I would open the connector shell and solder the contact crimps

Hey posplayr. The Electrosport R/R came had 3 yellow wires, one black, and one red wire. The red wire is connected to the battery through the 15A fuse. The 3 yellows are connected to the Yellow, W/G, W/Bl. wires off the harness. And the black wired is connected to ground.

I installed that weatherpack for quick disconnect. The bike will start and run but if i try to increase the rpm for the test it will just die.

Because I am running my W/G wire directly to R/R instead of going to light switch and back though W/R does that effect my load on the R/R since it does not go though the lights?

The stator wire never really ran through the lights. It just looped through the headlight bucket and back. On early models and other country models that allowed it, the wires were used to turn one leg of the stator off when the headlight switch was turned off.

This still sounds more like a fuel related issue then electrical stator or R/R problem. Wet plugs may indicate an overflowing float issue. When the bike stalls and wont start up again, does the airbox and filter smell like gas? After it stalls, have you tried to start it with the choke off and the throttle wide open? I'm a little suspicious of a float issue since you just rebuilt the carbs and that's when somethings tend to show up.

I'm going to check some resistances and voltages tonight.

I will also double check the float heights again. I know #2 is good as I double checked that on the weekend due to gas coming out the bowl drain (loose needle seat that I tightened up). The boots are all wet when I take it off. I will hook up the throttle and try to start it with choke off and throttle wide open tonight and let you know.

The coils read around 3.3 and 3.6 Ohms. Voltage over battery was 12.5. When the bike was idling it was sitting around 13.5. The one concerning thing is that when I switched the key on and the ignition on with lights the battery dropped to around 10 in seconds and kept falling fast. Should it be dissipating this low? I have a shorai Li-Ion. As to the problem of the bike running and dying, .....I think it is fuel. I closed the slides all the way to get more vacuum and choke so I think I will open those up again
