Most of the Honda R/Rs that were for permanent-magnet, 3-phase charging systems are an upgrade to the Suzuki units. However, for the price that you will likely pay, it is only just a bit more to get a MUCH BETTER upgrade in the form of an SH775.
A member here (Duaneage) used to sell Honda R/Rs (maybe he still does? ) to replace failing Suzuki units. I think they went for $40 or $45. Yes, you can find cheaper ones on eBay, but he tested his and guaranteed that they would work. Now, for about $70, you can get a brand new SH775 R/R from Polaris for about $70. Because this is a series-style regulator, it will minimize the load on the stator, helping it to last longer, which is something the Honda units do not do.
Go ahead and save a few bucks, get the Honda R/R.
We will still be here in another year or two, when you come back asking how to check/replace your stator.

It will work, but I wouldn't consider it specifically an upgrade.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

I would have said to just go out and get a SH775 myself, but he already has a replacement that could be used for now. I wouldn't consider it an upgrade though since it is still a shunt type regulator.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg
