    New stator wiring help

I Just rec'd my new Ricks stator, and discovered that all 3 leads from it are black. How do I know which wires go where? The Old one had Y , wh-b, and wh-G wires. Is it going to be a voltage difference between the wires that tell me or has it been determined that it don't matter? 1980 gs850gl. Thanks Tim

It makes no difference. In this particular case, wire color does not matter.
and God said, "Let there be air compressors!"

If you want your charging system to be reliable you need to wire the stator wires directly into the R/R. Cut and splice the wires as needed and bypass the factory harness. The R/R ground can go to either a solid frame point or the battery. The R/R power output should go to the factory harness, but make sure to measure to see if you get voltage loss along the way back to the battery. Check this link and look for the appropriate info to do this work, or search the archives here since there are literally thousands of posts about how to improve the charging system. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/...dd-n-ends.html

      Good luck

Thank you for your quick replies. Was originally concerned with misdirected wiring. I did go the simple route for now, with the use of wiring harness. I was reading just over 14v at 5k, which is what I have read is proper. Little by little this yard find, basket case bike is getting stronger and stronger. My Son keeps reminding me its a marathon and not a sprint..lol. Again thanks, this forum is extremely valuable for myself, and my son working on this bike. He is looking forward to his next year...

          You should be reading 14.5V.
Using the wiring harness will allow the stator retailers to sell you another stator relatively soon. Good for them, bad for you.

Yes, 14.5 V. You are most likely loosing voltage in the wiring.

One easy test: put one probe of your volt meter on the battery + terminal, and the other on the R/R power out wire (usually red), then rev up the engine to 5000 rpm. If you are reading more than say .2V, you need to fix the wiring.
