    Dead short in wiring

    My rear shocks are shot. So the bike is bottoming up and slamming the frame when I hit a big bump. It sometimes blows the main fuse.

    I put a new fuse in and all is well until the next big bump. I know. Fix the shocks. But in the mean time I need to find the short.

    It has now shorted out and blows the new fuse as soon as I put it in. I know just start looking. But is this a common problem that you guys could maybe point me where to a usual suspect. Thanks

    Disconnect R/R plug and put in new main fuse. Does fuse blow?

        Hmmm. Auto email notification isn't working. I missed the replies. Sorry.

        Tom. I haven't messed with the GS for quite awhile. It's mad at me. By R/R do you mean right rear plug on the fuse block. I'm just guessing with out looking. I'll take a look later today.

          No, by "R/R", he means "Rectifier/Regulator", the heart of the charging system.

          Unplug the red output wire from the harness. It might be in a 4-pin connector with the three stator wires, just unplug the entire connector and see if your fuse blows.

          Can't say for sure where it is on your bike, it might be under the right side cover or over the battery.

          My son has an '82 650L, but the wiring has been botched and bodged on it so much, I can't say for certain where any of the bits and pieces used to be.

              On my "L", that r/r plug is right above solenoid, next to 2 wire connector plug from signal generator.
              edit: should have said that is where it used to be,now long gone.

                I finally got to mess with this a little bit. I've been busy playing with my new Harbor Freight tire changer.

                First thing I did was look around for a shorted wire. I found nothing.

                Is the what you guys want me to unplug. See the unplugged connector. So I unplugged it, put a fuse in and it didn't blow. I then plugged the connector back in and the fuse still did not blow, and everything powered up. I wiggled a lot of wire's and nothing happened.

                So what does all this mean,,,,lol.

                  One thing; iave you cleaned out that fuse box? That can and often does lead to shorts. On this case clean mans pull the back off chemically clean and flow solde into the internal crimps.

                  you should have some contact cleaner like Deoxit or a highly recommended radioshack brand to spray all connectors as you pull them apart.

                    In your pic, the R/R plug is just to left of plug you disconnected- it's under the frame rail with 4 wires. Maybe a wire is touching frame or maybe your problem happens when R/R has been hot for a while.
