coil dying?
I just did an adjustment to my carbs because I put a more open exhaust on it. It still seemed to run a little hot, but all of a sudden the plugs on 1-4 are super lean. The sound of the engine gets rough at certain rpm ranges as well. This leads me to believe there might be a problem with the coil cutting out intermittently. I found instances of this on line, although I hear it's rare. My question is can I just switch the inputs and plug wires to see if the problem switches to 2-3 cylinders or are coils made to be run one as a primary or something? They are accell 140403s. Also, I think my battery may be nearing the end of it's life. Could this cause a problem. Everything works okay, but sometimes when I go to start it up the first time of the day it has a little trouble turning over.Tags: None

Which bike are you referring to?
If it's the 79 I'd check the points. If it is the points how many ohms are the coils?1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

It's for the 1100ex. I am looking for a way to test the coils with a multimeter. Does anyone happen to know what the resistance is supposed to be for these coils? I guess if one is working they should be fine if they match.

So I just did a resistance test on all my plug wires and between the coil posts. The resistance of the plug wires varied by the length the longer they were, the more resistance. Between the post on each coil 1-4 coil was 28.4 while 2-3 12.21 @ 200k on the multimeter. Shouldn't they be the same?
