Dyna S kit for 425 install on gs 450 plus new req/rect questions- in process
In process of installing dyna s kit with coils in my 81 gs 450. 3 specific questions. Others reference dremling out a couple millimeters for oil switch clearance. Why? 1. Does the oil switch move in and out and hit the plate or just looking for little more room for screw/wiring connection- without dremling appears very little clearance at screw. My oil switch appears to be a round red/orange item-correct? Question 2. Others reference need to sand down extra spacer/washer Dyna supplies upon request. Received mine and with tourqed down to 16 lbs, spacer still spins and rotor moves "what appears to me" to be freely with no slop. Did oil it some also. Finally, any tips to coil relay mod while in process of rewiring for the new dyna system that includes coils that have not already been posted in here? Ive read most of them. If i read one more ill probably just confuse myself more. I have already gone thru entire wiring and cleaned and replaced loose or burnt bullet connections. Plan to use crimped/soldered and wrapped butt connectors where ever possible as alternatives as Im replacing rect/reg as well. Unfortunately already bought one from Ricks and appears to be made in china vs japan. Your wisdom and experience always welcome. Got two more GS 550s to play with after this bike is done. Its a disease. gregTags: None

Hey Greg, after dremelling some clearance on my Dyna S plate it turns out it would've been fine... it was more precautionary than anything.
You won't need the spacer on the 425 as it had points, it's the electronic ignition rotor bolts on the 450's that are longer and require the spacer.
And yes, coil relay mod is a definite one! I didn't do the headlight or coil relay mod's on mine when I rebuilt it but I recently did both as although I had cleaned up the harness, over time I ended up losing about 1.5v at the coils which is not good!1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

ok guys, just a couple more questions re my gs450 upgrades. This process a little more confusing to me as Im trying to include a coil relay mod at same time. First, re the DSC-c3 install. Two red wires from dsc into one plastic connector that wont fit anything. Plan to cut -install two rings and connect to one coil. I only split the O/W power or do I split the reds also? dsc-3 wires would not go to relay- correct? Just wire relay mod as posts in here suggest or can i save some wire cutting while installing both ? Trying not to cut and re-connect if not necessary. Re the old ICU 6 pin and trigger 4 pin connectors. Plan to butt connect the new oil switch line to old. Do the remaining wires, Br, b/w & g/w have to be connected to the wires in the now not used 6 pin connector the ignitor plugged into? That six pin has a Br, b/w, g/w, o/w, g/w, w, and b/y. Finally, Re the Ricks chinese R/R I bought. This is my sons bike and want reliabilty. Should I save it for one of my future project 550's ill probably sell and buy a sh775 from Polaris now before I make the connections? Think i already know the answer- yes? Re RR connection- a question? Im direct connecting 3 stator lines and connecting remaining RR red to red under seat and leave other two w/g & w/r unused? Is there a need to seal unused connectors in shrink wrap to avoid shorts? I planned to. Sorry for all questions, Im new to the electrical work on bikes but at least after this one, the 550s should be easier. greg

While I've never seen one in person I believe the same DS3-3C should fit... don't forget to get some plug leads as well.1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie
