    Starter removal GS850L 82'

    Hi,
Can the starter be removed without taking the carbs off?

    Thank you

Yes. It's tight, but can be done.

Cool. I didn't want to get all involved and then find out it wouldn't work.

      Thank you

Pulling carbs on that bike is a piece of cake. 5-7 minutes, tops.

Starter is out. Quick work for small hands.

Aggggh, the impact screw driver won't budge the 2 skinny screws on the outside!

Vice grips (genuine, please) to the rescue!

Do you think I could just clean the commutator and brushes? Or should I replace the brushes?

What was this starter motor having difficulty doing?

Slow/lack of power on a cold engine with full battery.

Ok I went ahead and cleaned it to see how well that works. Is there a trick to getting the gears meshed again? I have about a 1/4" to go but it won't go in all of the way.

Works great! Cleaned off the black film that was on the commutator, filed the brushes a tiny bit, vacuumed and sprayed everything with starting fluid. Spins fast now.

The terminals on the solenoid and the motor itself are worth cleaning as well to get it spinning even faster.
