    Maintenance free battery recommendations (short commute to/from work)??

    Hi

    can any of you recommend a good maintenance free battery for my 1979 suzuki gs750l?? I use the motorcycle for a short commute to and from work.

    1) would it be helpful to purchase a battery that does not need to be recharged quite as often??

    2) would getting a battery from autozone be alright or would i have better battery options elsewhere??

    With a good charging system, just about any battery would do.

        I like Motobatt too (and the extra set of connectors can be useful) but the Deka is also good and perhaps a little cheaper these days and easier to get.... http://www.etx15l.com/

        The Deka also sells under the "big crank" brand. Made in PA I believe.

          Like I said before... A healthy charging system precludes any requirements for an advanced battery of great $$$. Get your charging system in good working order and you wont need anything more advanced then a basic lead acid battery.

            i hate acid damage from vented batteries.............
            i have had good luck and the best price with "chrome" brand AGM battery's out of Indiana.

                If you go with an AGM or other type of sealed battery, then you should check your charging system.
                Sealed batteries are less tolerant of voltage problems that conventional vented batteries.


                There are a lot of good choices for AGM batteries.
                I have several Scorpion batteries & haven't any problems with them.
                Get replacement 1979 Suzuki 750cc GS750, Katana Motorcycle batteries. Suzuki or any other motorcycle, find the battery you need at BatteryStuff.com.

                  Thank you for the input regarding different batteries to consider. I looked at the Scorpion, the Deka, and the Motobatt. I ended up getting a Deka Powersport Battery (ETX15L) through Tri-State Battery Warehouse. I was able to get it for $65 with shipping being free. The Scorpion (through BatteryStuff.com) was priced at about the same cost as the Deka.

                  P.S. I have already dealt with the charging system "woes" associated with the Suzuki GSs on my 1979 GS750L with the help of thegsresources website. I found the wiring diagrams from the service manuals located on BikeCliffs website to be helpful. In addition, there were some good posts from various guys on thegsresources website that proved to be beneficial as well. One thing that I stumbled upon in this whole process that was a great discovery was an easy way to replace the wire terminal connectors without having to solder or crimp connections. The Posi-lock connectors are a great in-line splice alternative. All they require is for one to strip one wire about 1/2 inch, insert it into the Posi-lock, and hand tighten. The same process is then done for the wire that is connected to the other side of the Posi-lock connector.

                    Did you wire the stator directly into your R/R and bypass the factory harness connections? If not, you haven't completed the job.

                      yes. it is done (after many trials and tribulations). the stator output connections run direct to the R/R. i was without my motorcycle for about 2 months this summer working on electrical stuff which stunk (this included installing a new stator as well as a new SH 775 R/R). the motorcycle appears to be doing well from an electrical standpoint thus far (knock on wood). better than it ever has. my next step will be to put about a tablespoon of oil on top of each piston head and test the compression with a compression tester. the oil creates a seal between the piston rings and the cylinder. if i have valve problems, the compression will be low. if i have ring problems, the compression should be higher. i compression tested the cylinders when the motorcycle was operable near the beginning of the summer and found one of the four cylinders to have a low compression value of 30 psi. the others were considerably higher. according to specs, if i remember correct, it should be at least 100 psi.
