82 1100E. Removing all unnessesary parts. Question I have is about electrical parts.Bike will have no blinkers. Is the blinker relay, the box located above and left of the starter solenoid? The bike will have the gauge cluster removed.There is a electrical box under the tank that is to the right of the main frame backbone. There is about a 1/4 million wires coming out of it. Am I correct in assuming this is for the gauges? I want to remove the side stand switch.How can it be disabled? With the proper connections,can the wires on the harness side be plugged in together to bypass the side stand switch? Thanks

Limeex2, I can't really help you, but I'm interested because I ride the same bike. Wouldn't mind seeing some pictures.

I like the idea of removing all unnecessary parts (I have no center stand, fairing, luggage rack, etc.).

My side stand light doesn't work, but I wouldn't mind if it did.

Curious to see what youre cooking up. I believe, but am not 100% sure that the box under the tank controls the auto function on the turn signals. Ive also read here to power up the wire to the sidestand switch (switched source) to shut out the light.

I am computer challanged! I will try to have the kids teach how to use photobucket. I am duplicating my old race bike which was a GS1100 4v in a gs1000 chassis. And a "few" mods... I have been taking pictures.I can check the service manual,but I was at work.That will probably shed some light.

I would love to hear your definition of "unnecessary".

Around my part of the world, gauges are necessary. Turn signals are necessary.

On my bikes, a centerstand is necessary. The side stand switch is not really necessary, but it sure is handy.

I don't know enough about your bike to offer help on most of your questions, but I can tell you that there is no need to 'bypass' the side stand switch. There is no interlock involved with it, it only turns on the light in the gauges to let you know the stand is not UP.

A schematic from a service manual should tell you what's what, by the color of what's going in and out of things.

Track bike for the street.Using the body work of my GS1000s that was a franken bike before there were frankenbikes.Fairing was sold and I it was laid down at some point. With the help of everyone here,its getting moderized.It sat in the corner of the garage for 30 years and its getting resurected.Its dirty and crusty and I am leaving it that way. Im starting a new class of bike. Rat/Race. It will only look ratty. I will get more serious when I start digging into the 1100es I picked up. What I feel is unnessesary is my opinion...

If one doesnt do things to attract the attention of the local constable,they will leave bikers alone.Other than no speedo its a legal bike. Poor bike? If I want a cream puff GS I will buy it that way. Do I judge others by their choice of direction in any bike or build? Never. There is a huge car meet at our state fair grounds.1000's of beautiful cars.What cars get the most looks? The Rat-Rods.The ones with purposely crappy welds, who left the out-side of the motor dirty and nasty,but when It gets started,it gives you goose bumps,or look underneath the ugly black rims,there lies a set of Brembo brakes,with over size rotors. This is a copy of the bike I started road-racing on.Only better. In the 9 years I raced,I may have more miles racing than some have street miles in their life time. It was run in 3 5hr endurance races,2 3hr endurance races,4 sprint races per weekend times 3 years and has seen the banks of Daytona.Its been saved through 2 divorces and 3 houses.Its has given me many fond memories and is about to give me more. The donor bike was my brothers ex-bike, who is now passed away. I'll make a nice bike out of the 1100ES that is back in the corner of the garage under plastic.

Not that I agree with chopping a GS1100E but for safety's sake here is a 550 schmatic that shoudl be a guide for minimum connections without lights.

You did touch my rat rod nerve though when describing the local car show. A true rat rod isnt a collection of purposefully shabbily assembled parts. Thats building a theme based vehicle. A true rat rod is the living history of a vehicle warts included....A vehicle hot rodded years ago and continually used and abused and reconfigured - could be a rat rod. An old hulk rescued from a backyard, barn, ditch, etc and made safe and functional for the entertainment of no one but its owner - probably a rat rod. A scratch built car made to look ratty- imposter!
The original intent of a rat rod was just to get out and have fun with anything old, shiny car guys be dammed. Then it became......a trend.

Just one mans opinion though.

I agree on the rat rod observation.Rat Rod, Resto-Mod whatever.They all have a level of creativity that I enjoy.Seems like everything I have/own is perfect and all in order.That is probably why I like them. If someone could post a link for photobucket,I can try to figure it out and post some pics.
