Both coils fail at same time?

1980 gs550e stock

Replaced the starter and cleaned carbs last weekend. Put it back together today and no spark...

have power from relay to coils, but not leaving coils on either side. Checked the plugs , they are fine.

Surely both coils wouldn't fail at once?!? Wiring seems ok .double checked my grounds. ...should I check anything else before throwing parts at it?

if I am buying coils any vender/brand you guys prefer?

More likely the igniter or related connections are bad. Might be the signal generator but still not as likely as the igniter or connections. Hate to say it but I hear a lot of igniter issues on the 550's.

make sure that the Coil(-) is moving between +12V and ground (close to 0.7V) when you crank the engine over. If not the ignitor is probably bad.

Yes the Ignitor tickles the coil on (-) to get it to fire.

but if you disconnected or disturbed wiring unintentionally, that could be a problem. seems funny you worked on it, then no spark.??

I had the same issue as you on my 850 and tracked it down to a disconnected igniter from when I pulled the electrics panel for a cleaning and inspection. Felt like a dumba$$ afterwards but embarassment is cheaper than an igniter.
