GS550 ignition module
Hello, im trying to make one good bike out of two Gs550`s and one of them has this mounted. I guess its a component for electrical ignition and i was wondering if i can transplant this into the other engine i have. The engine that has original ignition system is a 78mod with Vm carbs, if this ignition is compatible, what parts do i have to change over to the 78mod engine?gsign1.jpgTags: None

Havent checked behind the ignition cover yet, i need to order some gaskets first i guess.
Its on a running bike and sparks are good.
I will update when i`ve had a good look behind the cover.
Is this box stock on newer gs 550`s?

That is not a stock igniter for any year. To move it over to the other engine you'll need to transfer both what's under the signal generator/points cover and that unit. That box is aftermarket. 1980+ GS's came from the factory with an electronic ignition system. This is all detailed in your factory Suzuki service manual.Ed

I have now found out what kind of system this is.
Its a boyer brandsen, and i have just transfered it to my replacemet engine i mounted recently.(After checking that both engines use the same kind of points)
The replacement engine (from a 78 mod 550D imported from Germany) had the original Vm`s, that i have picked apart and cleaned out well, and at the same time i replaced all orings with a oring kit from robert barr, also the orings to the inlet manifolds. (excellent service by the way)
Its working better than the points(wasnt able to adjust properly because of some parts where to worn(on the points system)).
But now im planning to adjust it properly, and it would be great if you guys could help me out understandig the manual. Link to manual: http://www.boyerbransden.com/pdf/KIT..._BOX00019_.pdf
until now i have mounted everything, set engine to the T1-4 mark and adjusted the plate so that the rotor is now in the middle of the two protrusions on the plate (magnets?). Going to test it properly when i have charged my battery.( It was emty after staring it alot when i adjusted and tested stuff)
I can add some pictures later if needed.
Have i understod the manual properly for the static adjustment? (I have some technical knowledge,but this is the first time im working on the ignition of a engine without a cdi)
And for dynamic adjustment, what tools will i need (just a timing strobe, or some special kind?)

Those instructions from Boyer are quite good.
A normal timing strobe will do fine.
There's a Boyer fitted to my XS and I'm quite impressed how rock-steady the idle timing is, compared to the old mechanically-controlled ones.---- Dave

The idle is excellent now.
Now i just have to see if i can get my hands on a strobe tomorrow and set the full advance.
Im planning to use a littlebit threadlock on the threads of the statorplate adjustment screws and on the bolt that goes in the shaft when im done.
The riding days are closing in, damn its going to be exciting to see how it runs after all this maintainance
Hopefully, i just have to vacum balance carbs and it should be good to go.
