Good Day Have Some Electrical Questions!!

I just Bought a 1984 GS 1150, Nice Bike. Its in near Mint Shape with 34000 kms on it. All Stock except Ignition Unit . Got it started sounded kind of rough and i noticed a Prime ,reserve and run position on the Fuel Petcock. It wouldn't start right away so I tried prime and it actually begrudgingly started. I let it warm up and then it ran a bit rough, I switched it back to Reserve (Been sitting over 2 Years!!) I then shut it of and bought a gallon of premium with fuel conditioner (Canadian Tire) and poured it into the tank. (I had a heck of a time getting the seat off must be the minus 20 weather making all the greased parts solidify!! Actually bent the Key!!! Anyhow finally the seat came off and I charged the Battery up. Back to Bike.. It began running better and better and then I started to examine it. I found the previous owner had a Dyna 2000 Ignition in it. Upon looking under the Gas tank I noticed he still had the Stock Coils and Wires in it?? Is this bad? I thought it should of had 2.2 or 3.0 Ohm Coils to enhance the Ignition Properly. Its like a peanut Butter and Jam sandwich without the jam kinda thing!! Also I could NOT get the Headlight to work!! It has a Good Bulb i tested it but????? I am not sure but there's a electrical device that controls the headlight??? Anyhow Guys awesome site I don't know too much about 1150 s as My Other Bikes are 1100 s .Thanks Mike (Newer Member Here)

It would be a good idea to rebuild your carburetors (24hr soak in carburetor cleaner, only O-rings and gaskets need to be replaced), adjust the valves and go through the entire electrical system, clean all bullet connectors, plugs, switches and grounds. The carburetor boots most likely need replacement and certainly the boot O-rings have to be replaced. check out Posplayer's signature for updated electrical charging health. Z1 Enterprises is a good place for gaskets and a lot of other parts, they should have good prices on the Dyna coils and wires. Good luck and welcome to the forum. cycleorings for O-rings.

Here's a great site to get information:

http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/As Oldvet66 said, you need to do all of the maintenance that's been ignored over the last 30 years. Carbs NEED to be cleaned, Valves must be adjusted first and then the carbs need to be synced. All the information on the carb rebuild is here:

You can buy the O-rings from here:

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

Thank you very much for the Replies . Some good Information there!! I am still bewildered by the Headlight Issue. It wont work or switch on? Is there a electrical device that is suspect in GS 1150 Headlight operations? I seem to remember something ...somewhere I read but so long ago. Thanx Mike

All contacts/crimps/switches are suspect; get some DeOxit (amazon) and spray all of your connections; if they are filthy then use something a little stronger. (I use Naval Jelly; it works) , flush with water then spray with DeOxit to get the anti corrosion coating. You can use dielectric grease but DeOxit is much easier to just give a quick spray.

If you do the required maintenance you should stumble upon the problem with the light. Dissemble switches in a clear plastic bag so you don't loose any small springs and parts. You will usually find a green patina on the parts that need cleaning and dielectric grease.

Wow. I think step #1 would be to wait until you have a working environment that's a little more suitable to human life. I take it you mean -20C, right? Which would still be -4F! That's one chilly workshop!

                'A' for determination, though.

Thanx Guys!! Yes cold is cold up here for sure. I thought there was some weird electrical headlight controller that burns out? or gives trouble on the GS 1150 s ? I know on my 1000 s it was just a simple setup. Anyhow thanx YES working in the Trailer is a bit unorthodox I guess. My Garage has a heated floor and is so full of Bikes and my atv which i am repairing . It Yamaha 400 2002 big bear) had a badly rusted and incredibly seized rear Brake Drum assembly. i actually had to cut the cover of to get it apart. Previous owner had yama bonded the brake drum cover into place!! I appreciate the replies. Mike
