What years had the 12 pole stator?

I just pulled the flywheel and starter clutch from a spare 1980 GS1000GL engine to sell. To my surprise it had a 12 pole flywheel. 3 segments with 4 poles per segment. Any idea what years and models had the 12 pole stator assemblies? Seems strange that this came from a 1980 GS1000GL bike but nothing about this bike surprises me now. Hard to sell a part if you don't know what it goes to.

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

My '79 definitely had a 12-pole, from the factory. It got the heave-ho as soon as I sussed out there was a better one available from breakers.

Basically, if the bike had a kick starter, it had a 12-pole stator.

Up to 1979 had the 12-pole stator then switched to 18-pole in 1980.

Except for the 1000. It appeared in 1977. It never had a kick starter, and it had an 18-pole stator.

Thanks guys. Good information. Funny thing was the PO told me that the "bike shop" was working on his charging problem. When I opened it up I found an 18 pole stator with a 12 pole rotor. Needless to say it did not charge. Now I'm parting out the bike and finding a huge number of "oddities" on this one. This is a "1980 GS1000GL" and found it had GS1100E carbs along, a 79 front brake/wheel assembly along with this odd rotor/stator combination and a bandit R/R. This thing was a mess, but what do you expect for $300.

How does the stator look? Are you selling it?

I used the stator in the GS1100G engine since the one it came with was shorted to the core.
