Thickness of Stator Cover Gasket
I am looking at a week or so wait to get a stator cover gasket and was thinking about making one from some gasket material from an auto store because I want to get things buttoned up. I know, on some gaskets, the thickness is important so that parts mesh correctly inside the cover. I would think maybe this wouldn't be so important on the stator cover gasket. Any opinions??1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

Thanks. Yeah, I was just thinking the sheets of gasket material they sell at Advance Discount Auto are probably thicker than the OEM gaskets but I just measured the thickness of a side of cereal box and it is almost identical to the gasket in thickness.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

Somewhat off topic here and while I do work at a place that sells parts I don't care where a man gets them: The last time I needed gaskets for my stator cover I noticed that in our catalog at work Rick's (the electrical part company) was selling stator cover gaskets. Our parts distributor is nearby (parts unlimited) so we get aftermarket stuff next day, so it was nice being able to get the part quickly. I don't know how quickly most distributors ship to gainesville, we did a lot of tucker rocky orders when I lived in Palm Bay so they may have a warehouse supplying dealers nearby. The gasket has worked well. I know the information doesn't really help you now, but if you ever end up needing one again it might save you some time on your order, and anyone who may stumble upon this thread in the future will have information about another option beyond visiting Suzuki if that's what they want. Hope you get your bike sorted soon! It was beautiful up here today!

I'm used to being in a shop so by default I always fall back to the distributors I order the most from while I'm there. Wouldn't make sense for me to do otherwise. A lot of individual parts companies can be awkward to set up as a dealer so most shops deal with bigger distributors. Right now we order mostly through Parts as their warehouse is close by and we get parts next day (warehouse in NC mountains). I don't know who would be closest to Gainesville. I left Florida in 2005 and at the time I remember Tucker Rocky shipping quickest there, but I haven't picked up one of their catalogs since 2010 or so, so I don't know for a fact what they carry these days. As for Rick's, I don't really know where they're located off hand. They may be quick to order from or they might be one of the many businesses stationed in California. Next time you run into the issue run into your favorite local shop and see what they say if you want.

Thanks, I ordered one from ebay and ,in the meantime, I made one from some 1/32 " sheet gasket material from NAPA. I think OEM is about 1/40" thick (.025). The local metric bike dealer is listed as a Parts Unlimited dealer but they weren't open on Sunday.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

I placed an order for the same gasket on 11th April from Surprise, Az, on ebay and I still having got it, I was sent the Wrong one right enough but that wasn't much good and apparently the right one is on its way, no questions asked! Tomorrow's a holiday, so won't come tomorrow. Weather has been wet an cold so that helps a little.

I've seen some really crappy fleaBay and aftermarket gaskets cut from a very thin paper -- less than a grocery bag in thickness. These don't work well at all, and on some bikes they can cause the shift shaft or starter intermediate gear shaft to bind.
Anything a bit thicker, like cereal box cardboard or a little more, should be fine.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
