calling all points experts. spark issue I can't figure out

78 750, with ND ignition. I had very intermittent spark on 2-3 coil which would make the bike fall on its face over 4k rpm. I hooked up my timing light and on both #4 spark plug lead and #3 were showing 1-4 in the sight window. I ordered up replacement points and condensors from Z1, installed them, set the time, and the bike ran great. Timing light showed properly #4 lead 1-4 in the window and #3 lead 2-3. Couple rides later the bike is falling on it's face again so I pulled off the points cover and it's back to only showing 1-4 in the window with the light. Did the new parts already fail or is there something I'm missing?

    Thanks in advance.

Did you put some grease on the points cam when you installed the points? If you didn't you've probably worn the rubbing block down enough that it's altered the gap, and therefore the timing.

Check the gap again on both sets, and make sure the cam is greased.

Make sure the wire from 2-3 coil to points is not randomly grounding out along its path somewhere.

ghif it is grounding out look at the ruber peice that the wireing goes through the points housing ive ran into cracked peices on other stuff just a place to cheak but first cheak the points gap JayWB has a very valid point on your points

Check your plug caps and wiring. Might be cracked and still works ok at low rpm

Solved the issue tonight. You're correct there was wire that had worn through the insulation and was grounding out.
