However, when I got home I realized I had four BP8ES and not the usual B8ES plugs. A quick google revealed that these are the "projected" plugs and are longer and have a resistor or something. Will these work in the GS? I'm probably going to take them back regardless since I'm bitter from this being way more difficult than it should be, but got a little curious...

B8ES vs BP8ES
Well I went to the local Advanced Auto Parts store to get a radiator fan for my car and figured I would pick up a couple extra spark plugs for my GS. The guy working couldn't find them in the computer, even after looking up my year make and model on the computer, even after I said "It's NGK B8ES" and so I didn't get my plugs that day. I went back today to pick up some chain lube and figured I would try again. Different guy, I saw him them up on the computer and the "B8ES" on the screen - he went and grabbed them and at a glance all looked well.

This is taken from ngk GS850 GN/GT/GX/GZ/GD/GE/GG79/88 B8ES and BR8EIX which is iridium
they do not recommend any other, personally I would stay with their recommendations.

They have a longer earth electrode, you could have a clearance problem when piston is at TDC. I would return them for correct plugs. My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Until someone can show how much actual room is in the combustion chamber when the piston is at TDC, I would stick with the standard B8ES plugs.
My KZ1300 worked better with projected tips, but it had enough room to handle them.

Unless you're sure of the spacing available for a projected tip, best not to chance it. Some GSs will accomodate them perfectly fine (mine, for example) and I've decided to try a set of BP7ES on mine as I got a very good price on a box of them that I couldn't turn down, as those were the ones I needed for the XS anyway.
Now, according to one or two ignition gurus, a projected tip will give you an effective advance in your ignition spark of around 2 degrees or so, so if you do that, be prepared to retard your ignition if necessary. Some engines will need slight adjustment, some won't, but there are many thousands of engines out there running the slightly wrong plugs without apparent damage, which says more for the relative bullet-proof nature of the basic design than anything about owner carefulness, imo.---- Dave

It would sure simplify things down at the local Cheap Chinese Auto Parts.

There aren't many, but a x-ref to more commonly available Motorcraft or Champion plugs may bring up more local cars.
That list is a bit sparse in application data, and so far all I've found is a Champion N3C listing.
This, however, is more promising...
