Dyna S dynamic timing
I have a Dyna S on my 80 GL1000GL. I know how to check timing using a timing light for 1/4 and know that the adjacent Duna pickup coils should be 180 opposite the 1 &4. Has anyone come up with a way to time 2 and 3 using a light? Perhaps remove the Dyna S plate and make a mark 180 degrees away from the 1/4 side?Tags: None

The advance unit should have marks for 2-3 T and F.Ed
To measure is to know.

Time it for 1-4 and then set the timing for 2-3 by slipping the 2-3 module. Loosen the little Allen head screws at each end of the module. It's going to be real close anyway so you won't have to move it much. Move it until it aligns with the timing mark tighten and readjust if tightening moves the mark. You're done. No need to check advance if that was correct on 1-4 it will be the same for 2-3.Last edited by OldVet66; 03-25-2016, 06:54 PM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

I didn't think the mechanical advance has 2/3 T or F mark. The bikes I am most familiar with that us IC Igniter ignitions don't have 2/3 timing marks since the timing was never supposed to need adjustment. Thanks... ran into a snag in that the back of case gaskets I received and about the last thing that I needed prior to starting the bike, syncing the carbs and checking timing had the wrong stator gasket... the one that was included was a GS1100 gasket. New one being sent Monday. Thanks!

If it has a mechanical advance without the marks for 2-3, look for a mechanical advance from an earlier model. Like I said it will be real close from the factory. I ran mine for a year before I set 2-3 with a light and didn't notice any appreciable difference, but I suppose it is always better to have them dead on. There was a GS1100E model in 1979 before they switched to electronic ignitions.Last edited by OldVet66; 03-26-2016, 06:13 PM.http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.
