    New regulator blows fuse instantly

Hey all I have been having charging problems that i have been trying to fix i get about 12.5 when its at about 4k or so rpms. So i said what the heck lets replace the stator and regulator. I havent replaced the stator yet but i bought a cheapy regulator for 20 bucks from ebay and decided it was worth the risk. My old regulator wasnt bolted to the frame and was sitting under the seat so i suspected it was dead due to heat and not a good ground spot( previous owner). So today I plugged in my new regulator and now everytime i finish plugging it in the 15amp main fuse blows, If i plug in the old regulator no fuse pops. Am i doing something wrong or did I just get a bad regulator?

    Thanks
    Andy

How many wires on this cheapy r/r? If 5, then the red wire goes into harness near fuse box (just like old unit) and another wire grounds the r/r to battery/frame. Seems your cheapy is shorting out.

Hopefully you have read the endless posts on series vs. shunt r/r's . If you must have a shunt unit ,get a genuine Shindengen off a 35 year old honda like a SH-232 : typically about $20 used.Avoid ebay chinese knockoffs .

test your current stator- you might not need a new one. Put the saved money towards a series SH-775 r/r.

Its a 5 wire reg. I hope to call up a few bike junk yards near me and see if they have anything. Can I use any late model honda regulator or does it have to be the sh232. For example if I find one that has 6 wires instead of 5 thats still useable right?
      Thanks

There are lots of Shindengens that would work. And like lots of them, the SH-232 has six wires- one being a "sense" that tells the r/r how charged the battery is. Have you seen this Basscliff tutorial?

Note that you don't need a r/r at all to test your stator for decent AC output. Link on Basscliff's for info

I believe the sense wire plugs into a circuit in the wiring harness and tells the regulator/rectifier how much voltage is on that circuit and the reg/rec adjusts the voltage accordingly so that a positive potential exists and the battery charges. Most are set to minimum 12VDC and maximum 14.5VDC. When the voltage on a circuit goes higher, the reg/rec adjusts so that the battery will charge at the proper voltage. The sense wire isn't connected to the battery; typically a red wire is.

Okay just wanted to send you guys an update. I took off the side cover. And i found the the stator wires were all burnt up and I definetly needed another one. I replaced that and now my battery is charging. The regulator ended up working still which was good news.

            Thanks for all the help
