    Sealant or not?

Working on install of new stator. I see when I put the previous one in years back, I used a light coating of silicone sealant in addition to the gasket on the stator cover. Looks grey, maybe the Suzuki engine case sealant I have had for years.

Question is, should I go ahead & use the sealant as well as the gasket or just gasket alone. I have heard many strong opinions on this over the years from both sides of this from mechanics I trust.

Willing to listen to any wisdom to be thrown at me before I reassemble.

    Thank you so much!!!

New gaskets shouldnt leak without sealants. Did you maybe reuse the gasket at some point and thats why it had sealer on it now????

Sealant around the stator wire grommet is a good idea. Maybe a dap where the case halves come together on the gasket surface too. Otherwise you don't need anything more.

I am the biggest cheapskate but the only gaskets I reuse are under the starter cover or under the "points" cover or whatever the name is for that RH round outer case cover. Don't have a leak at stator cover just can't remember sealing that gasket & if I should or shouldn't.

Thanks for your reply! And yours too Ed. I think I will go commando on this one. I did do the rubber grommet as the one on the Caltric stator didn't look as secure, now it is.
