There is a way to test the ignitor, but you have to do it VERY carefully, or you will definitely kill it.
Do you have a manual? If not, click HERE to get one. I just looked through the manual, could not find the test. They mention the ignitor, but not how to test it. I know I have seen the test, not sure if it was in my 650 book or 850 book, I will have to find it and get back to you.

I'm not an expert on the matter but some members have reported inconclusive results following the testing methods in the service manual.
The parts fishe shows the following bikes used that same ignitor. Unfortunately, it's one of the more problematic part numbers (450's are burning those things out all the time). It may have to do with sensitivity to high voltage from over charging the battery (poor R/R ground). My point is that finding a reasonably priced unit is not easy.

looks stock to me. I replaced ignitor on sons 450 with dyna system, including coils for price of one of them. Says it runs stronger then ever, did coil relay mod at same time.

I think I will go with a Dyna unit to replace the ignitor. The original ignitor is about the same price as a Dyna unit but replaces the signal generator and the ignitor. The coils check out ok so I will continue to use them.

Is there a difference between the Dyna units? The only reason I am asking is that I see a unit without the coils for sale that is $120 but it says that it is not compatible with my bike. There is another unit that seems to have the same specks but also includes the coils for $280. Couldn't I just purchase the $120 unit and use stock coils or do I need to replace stock coils as well? Thanks in advance for any advice.
