    Oops

    Has anybody had this happen before, I was coming home from a ride and heard a high pitch whine, (no not the wife on the back).
    I was thinking because it wouldn't start that I'd check and replace the stator with a new one I had in the cabinet. Of course you have to take off the starter cover to get at the wiring and look what I found.
    The bike stopped about a kilometre from home, and we had to trailer it back. Just a total lose of power and unable to start, obviously. Hence the stator replacement as well.
    I'm wondering if it's a short in the ignition or the starter relay has gone kaput, and causing the starter motor to constantly engage.
    Lucky I have a replacement starter that's going in tonight after I check it, the gears it attachs to are all ok, phew.

    Is the starter clutch OK ?
    It hasn't locked up ?

      Looks ok. None of the gears are mashed up destroyed, I have a spare set anyway. But it's funny how the rear case broke off, like a the rear starter bearing let loose and destroyed the casing.

        The high pitch whine followed by starter motor destruction would make me suspicious that somehow the starter clutch locked up driving the starter motor to suicide revs.

          more disassembly please.....
          Could have just been a flawed casting breaking after a million heat cycles and spins.

            The bike started fine previously, cranking over easily. I'm more inclined to believe it's an electrical problem causing the motor to constantly engage until it destroyed itself. None of the gears show any sign of wear or damage.

              are the brushes and commutator all worn to bits?

                Check your start button, too. The springs in them get aged and feeble.

                  All brand new switches and wiring loom, reg/relay thingy, ignition switch is new, electronic igintion, new coils, new battery, and the list goes on.
                  New stator being installed tonight, but the rubber plug going though the casing is a tad to short. Have to remedy that by moving it along the wires somehow.
                  9pm, and time for bed. 3 degrees Celsius in the shed and the oil heater can't keep up. I have a trip up to the motor museum tomorrow to check out some vintage motors they had donated a few years ago, might find some early Suzuki stuff.

                    Before you fire up, I would suggest removing the plugs and cranking it by hand, in the forward direction, from the 19mm head on the ignition pickup and see if the starter clutch is not dragging the new starter motor.

                      I have the plugs out already and tried rolling the motor over via the back wheel, no luck. So I'll try your suggestion. I've ordered a new oil filter and sump gasket as well, because it's done 500 miles since the top end rebuild.

                        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
                        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.
