quick stator test + turn signal challenge makes me scratch my head.

I'm following previous discussions and stator papers/POSplayer tests, as well as ordering various parts, but If anyone has any insight, I'd be grateful as all get out..

    relatively unmolested 1979 850.
OEM turn signals, R/R, wiring harness, auto-cancel box, et cetera.
Dyna coils and coil replacement last fall.
New battery yesterday, topped up w/ battery tender junior prior to test.

I've gone through connectors, cleaned and dialectric greased all, as far as I can find. Ditto bulbs.

WHAT IT DOES: charges at a low or negative rate, slowly drains, then kills battery when used daily for short in-town commute.
WHAT IT DOES: turn signals blink when bike is parked. (rear blinkers seem less bright than front). But when riding, blinkers either don't come on, come on only after holding selector over for several seconds, or cancel instantly. (full disclosure....have shot some contact cleaner into handlebar turn-signal switch, but have not fully disassembled it)

My question: of the blinker, Reg/Rec, Stator, and 1979 auto-cancel unit, which are the most likely culprits? are these 2 issues linked, or separate?

Results of quick test (measured both on battery terminals and at the battery tender pigtail connector)
    1) key off 13.3
    2) key/run switch on 10 seconds, not running 11.9
    3) idle 1500 RPM 12.3
    4) held revved at 5000 RPM 12.8
    5) key off 12.6

Turn signals commonly act up when voltage is low, however the '79 turn signal control unit is very problematic so all bets are off trying to link the the problems noted to the charging system.

BTW, your bike has a 12 pole stator/rotor vs 18 pole for later GS bikes.

If'n I ordered a stator from Z1 for a 79 gs 850, am I likely to get the right part? (and/or, will an 18 pole switch in OK?)

You can not use an 18-pole stator unless you also change out the rotor.

Does Z1 actually have a 12-pole stator? How much? I have at least one left over that is freshly-rewound that I can offer to you for $85, shipped to your door.
