I'm a bit confused by what your saying. Generally when a petcock(tap) has failed on me, fuel will only come out in the prime position. I have limped home with it on prime but switch it to an on when I stop. An inline tap could be added to insure fuel won't continue flowing.

He hasn't got a prime on that tap Charlie. He would probably get fuel flowing through the main fuel line with the vacuum hose removed (and tap and carb blocked off) but the problem with the diaphragm might be intermittent, hence my suggestion to remove it.79 GS1000S

Do this.

Don't say can't, as anything is possible with time and effort, but, if you don't have time things get tougher and require more effort.

Thanks form all help . Obviously I'm gonna get a new tap as informed.
But to get going immediately I need as minimum an inline
tap unless I use it on all the time.
Again it back on the push bike to find one.
That will be impossible ! But I'll try.
In meantime I'll find a new petcock.
Thanks so much for help. I simply must getback on the road
and to be honest now I know this is all it was I am not
limping home but heading on to venice.
This only if I can dodge the weather.
Thanks again guysUKJULES

Just an update .
A paddock fixed the issue.
I have the wrong one at mo from a local shop with pipes hanging out
The side but it works perfectly.
( the one with prime has the outlets the wrong side )
I must look again and see if you can turn them round.
Mine is just a on and res one. Parts not swappable.
Anyway new tyre, oil change , petxoxk sorted
My old one as backup with middle chopped out and this a gasket.
I now look for an original petcock or a good diaphragm kit.
It was only the diaphragm.
The garage said it was the cheap petrol that are it away.
Anyway he was the most helpful chap I could ever have met.
Italian.
Thanks to all !
I'll open another thread as I am now cpntinueing towards Barcelona.
I want to know , can these old bikes do long road trips.
Day 14.Now and about 700 miles.UKJULES

I think I should have brought the kwak 750r1 (1982)
But I didn't as not cool enough. A gs is the only bike to ride
On these ventures .
I have not done a day in a hotel for 14 nights.
I know many have done this but I needed to know can you
seriously cruise not in a new bmw 1200 but a cool old bike.
The answer is yes.
I ain't stopping until I get to Barcelona .....
Couldn't do it without this site mind.
Will update but heading towards colditz where I will stay in zee guesthouse
In zee castle.UKJULES

I got loads of pics . I only have a mobile and it does not seem
to be easy to load images from an android.
Think we need the web develeper to get stuck in ?
I'd like to post my gear as I have no idea if this is the way to do it.
It is working though. I think of my bike as a horse.
To not ruin the lines all kit is not top boxes but bags.
So when sightseeing is necessary I can base in the tent and be free.
A gs on the road in the sun ......
I mean what else is there ?UKJULES

Yes that's the setup. That was good time s in France..
Now near Hanover. I lo g for the roads of the Somme area and Normandy.
I am on my way to Leipzig.
230 miles and bike ran like a dream. I stopped befoe
It wanted too.
I think France an d Spain are the good routes.
I have not enjoyed holland or Germany so far.
Pic is from when I was trapped in holabd and carbs out in a field !
