    Starter rebuild

    Could I go wrong here?

      I pulled the trigger.
      I found Stockers Starters in my search but I couldn't pass on this price.
      Just worried about quality.

        Is yours two-brush or four-brush? There's the where you can go wrong

          I went over some tutorials and discovered that difference. I'm assuming (gambling) based on the part number of a stock starter and this kit matching. If I'm wrong, at that price, I'll just pass it on to someone who may need one for four brushes.

            I believe all the Suzuki bikes in your signature use the same starter. I just ordered a rebuild kit for an '82 1100g and it was a 4-brush kit similar to what you linked.

              Good to hear. I don't want to disassemble the starter only wait on the correct kit. My research pointed to this starter being used in many Suzuki models. I also found a couple different companies that built Starters for Suzuki.

                That is true. One of them used 2 brushes, the other used 4. Hard to tell the difference from the outside.

                  That is what I found, and both with the same part number...??
                  It's supposed to rain today so I'll pull the starter and at least see what the inside looks like.

                    It's a five minute job to find out - and anyway, even if you have the wrong one, it's cheap to buy one of the right type and use your new brush plate on it.
                    Sod's Law being what it is, all mine are two brush. I don't think there's any difference in reliability between them.

                      Yeah, Sod's brother Murphy shows up at my place often.

                      The reason I'm rebuilding the starter is sluggish operation. I've been through the charging system and all is well.
                      Yesterday didn't rain much so I rode instead of removing the starter. I did some testing on the solonoid to play with the new tester and see if all was well.
                      Here are the results, starter wire disconnected headlight fuse removed.
                      Battery: 12.44V
                      Solonoid battery term: 12.41V
                      Starter term, button pushed: 12.34V
                      Y/G @ solonoid: 21.2mV no button
                      Y/G @ solonoid: 8.9V, button pushed
                      Y/G @ button side of bullet connector: 115mV, no button
                      Y/G @ button side of bullet connector: 11.4V, button pushed

                      This shows me some switch cleaning is in order but I don't understand the low voltage present on terminals with no button.
                      Shouldn't they be 0V's?

                        The meter will not read 0v on an open switch. It's picking up stray EMF. Perfectly normal.

                            You gotta be kidding.

                            So I got my rebuild kit in today and Sod and Murphy both showed up.
                            They got into an argument right away. It seems Sod was unhappy that Murphy allowed my kit and starter to both be 4 brush. That made me happy for awhile so I offered them both a beer.
                            As we were drinking our beers Sod encouraged me to look further into the shape of my starter. So I did. This is what I found.20160725_163413.jpg
                            This warbled out hole allowed the armature to eat into the housing until the magnet was exposed and one of the brushes guides was destroyed to the point that the brush would not make contact.
                            The two of them just laughed and laughed and it pi**ed me off. But I got over it quickly and offered them another beer.
                            I then told them that I had a good starter in my '83 but I didn't want to bone it out but I wanted to ride worse. Then i told them that i was going to take Grimly's advice and rebuild one from e-bay with my new kit. So as I was removing the '83 starter they got pi**ed and left. They didn't even finish their beers.
                            That's when I drank their beers and installed the starter then went for a ride. Life is sweet!
