    Coil, wires, caps?

    Gents:

1979 GS750L, being transformed into a cafe racer style bike.
But staying stock as possible in most areas, for ease of maintenance.

    Coils:
Tested them last night, and the primary and secondary is shot on one, secondary on the other.
    Bike runs on two cylinders.
One plug cap resistor was nothing but ashes. Others look fine.
One coil got very hot. One got slightly warm. (?)

    Question:
Buy stock coils at $113 each?
Or shift to Accel or similar? (At slightly higher cost and wiring hassle?)

    Your input welcome.

Accel is good, others are, too, but this would also be a golden opportunity to ditch the points and go electronic ignition.

      Yeah, well, ya know ...
trying to keep this project bike cheap, and I kind like the old points.
Been a long time since I had a bike with them.
And, could be handy for the EMP/zombie apocalypse ...

I went with Dyna coils and plug wires. I also ditched the points for a Dyna S electronic ignition. I purchased them from Z-1 Enterprise (best price) all for $280 something. But even if you just get the coils and plug wires, your motorcycle will be happy👍

          How difficult was all that?

And how much hassle was doing that?

Because, by the time I get done with new coils and plugs ... I'd be in that ballpark.

Another option is Boyer Bransden electronic ignition. I had it installed in my 750 before it even left the shop I bought it from years ago. I don't remember what I paid for it. I just hate dicking around with points.

I have to question your checking technique. If both coils check bad it can NOT spark on two cylinders. In any event I'd advice to keep the points as long as you can source points and condensers. After all internal combustion engines have used point for nearly 100 years. Yeah they are hard to keep in time and take a real commitment to adjust and set timing but they work.

Often these old bikes have marginal or failed/failing coils. If it were me I get new coils. They will be good for another 20 or 30 years.
