1983 gs850gl stator question
Okay, I used the stator pages (excellent read by the way), and my stator read no ohms on either wire, so its shot (left me stranded this morning on the way to work). Okay cool, got that out of the way. My question is, I was planning on taking the stator cover off anyway due to an oil leak. Is there a seal behind the stator the needs replacing while I'm in there?Tags: None

There's a gasket for the cover, but the stator just bolts to the inside of the cover and there are no other gaskets / seals.
Although, put some 3bond or whatever your favourite sealant is around the rubber grommet for the stator wires or else it will leak.Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )
Past:
VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

No crank seal on that side. The stator gets wet from oil splash.
Be sure to order up a SH775 and Triumph harness jumper while installing the new stator.Ed

Oil splashes all around inside the engine while running. Fling off the crank, transmission gears, etc. The cavity inside the engine where the stator is positioned is not wide open to the inner guts of the engine but there are open passages. You don't need to concern yourself with this though. Get a new stator cover gasket and some good sealer like Threebond 1184 so you can seal the stator wire grommet inside the cover. You will need an impact driver to get the engine cover off without damaging the phillips heads screws. And of course, as mentioned, you should replace the R/R at the same time as the stator and redo the wiring per common forum wisdom. Find posplyer's guidelines and go from there.Ed

Since it has been mentioned that there is oil in there, I will also mention that if you put the bike on the centerstand, then put a 2x4 under the left side of the stand, you will not need to drain the oil before pulling the cover.
