    Start Problems

Hello all. I have and '82 GS450 and I am having some electrical issues. Functionality of the bike changes each day. Some days it'll turn on fully and others the start button will do nothing. Currently when I press the start button I hear the click from the starter relay and that's it. Battery is fully charged. I noticed that the horn was weak so somewhere power is not traveling. I can't pinpoint the cause of this though. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Could be your solenoid. Stick a screw driver across the two poles and see if it fires up. There is also a screw adjustment on your horn you can adjust which sometimes helps...............

Put the screwdriver across. It started to click very fast but no start, no engine turn.

forum advice will likely be: thoroughly inspect the wiring harness, check all connectors, clean and lube/replace any that are dodgy, inspect switches, clean and lube those too, check battery connections and particularly the grounds. Consider some wiring/electrical upgrades and mods. Plenty of info in the electrical section on all that. But start with the basics. Could be that solenoid, they are purty easy to figure out/repair/replace.

Take the cover off and tap the starter motor with a hammer as you push the button. It may be stuck. If it cranks then cool. If it cranks slowly or stops after a second or two the motor is shot and it will need changed out.

Just happened to me with the bike I picked up. I took the starter cover off and pecked the starter and got a reaction from it. It started to turn over. I found a screw loose that goes in the back of the starter that holds it down. I put it back in and wiggled the starter and it hit. It has started ever since. I believe it was just my starter being stuck.

Tapping the starter motor didn't help. I'm getting around 12 volts at the solenoid when I turn the bike on. After I press the start button I only get 10 volts.

Check your connections going to your battery. Make sure the ground cable (battery -) has a clean and tight connection at both ends. Make sure the cable going from the battery + to the starter solenoid is clean and tight at both ends. Check the voltage across the battery when you short across the starter solenoid. If it drops to 10V then it's either the battery or a burnt starter motor. Don't assume that a charger reading full charge is telling you that your battery is good.

I got the engine to turn briefly today after a fresh charge. Then it seemed like the battery was losing charge as I kept trying to turn it on. Took a look at the voltage across battery and when shorting the solenoid it drops to a little over 10 volts.

did you buy the battery brand new, or did it come with the bike? the battery that came with my gs650g ended up taking a dump on me and would make the bike do what yours is doing. it'd be worth having it tested to see if it isn't on its way out
