    Fried CDI!!

Hello I am new to this site but have been reading threads for a couple of years now. The problem I have is the ignitor/CDI for my 1980 gs1100e was put on a direct short one day while I was doing some testing on my bike. It started smoking and got real hot real quick, but I was able to take it apart clean the wires up and it does still work but I'm worried about it failing when I start riding. This has been my project for a few years just slowly moving. It's not far from being done. Anyways I have an early 90s model katana 600 with a good CDI and I'm wondering if I can wire that into my 1100 system without any issues or do I need to find another for my exact bike any help would be much appreciated

Post up some photos of the unit and what numbers are written on it. I think I've got a spare. It's an ignitor by the way, not a CDI.

Humm, the unit I have is the newer type. 32900-34210. It might work but I can't guarantee it.

What do the plugs look like on your unit? I think most of the Suzuki ignitors function the same, but the packaging size changed over the years and so did the cable length and so forth.

Checked the 1100E and 650 manual (the ignitor PN I've got suggests it came from a 650) and the signal generators test to the same resistance values.

So does that mean that my spare unit from the katana will work? If I wire everything up correctly and I burn up the unit from the katana I am not worried about it because I have others for it, but do you think that it might affect anything else negatively? And I cannot remember what type of plugs are in there I'll have to check when I get off of work. The main thing I was concerned with is the katanas run off of an alternator and the 1100 runs off of a stator

Katana with an alternator? That must be a late model bike because the GS family bikes used a permanate magnet generator system w/RR unit. I don't think that the charging system would affect the ignition regardless. I do know that some of the later model year bikes are using low impedance coils and the advance curve is built into the ignitor, which is different from your bike. If you have an ignitor from a GS that uses a mechanical advance unit, and the signal generators test the same as your bikes, then I believe there is a good chance the ignitor will work with your 1100.

As Nessism mentioned, starting late '82 or '83, Suzuki changed the ignitor to include an electronic advance curve and did away with the mechanical advance on the crank.

Your '80 1100 will have the mechanical advance. Don't know about the advance on the Kat. It might be in the ignitor. If it is, you will need to remove the one from the crank so you don't get a double dose of ignition advance.

yes the katana ignitor is off of an early 90's (91 or 92 I believe) model so I'm sure it would have been changed by then, as far as removing the mechanical advance from my engine I will look into that for sure, I would rather just use a stock unit but I cant afford to buy another one just yet. I still have other things I can do in the meantime so maybe I can get it on the road next riding season since ours is almost over. Thank you for all the help, I'm sure I will be back asking more questions soon. I love reading the threads here.
