No spark on my 82 gs650
My dad gave me his old bike and I finally have some time to sink into it. It's in need of a complete make over but Im trying to get it to at least fire up for me. I know a bit about bikes but am by no means a mechanic. I started with cleaning the carbs , slapping in a battery, and rebuilding the starter. It'll turn over but for some reason I can't get any spark to the plugs. I found a thread that showed how to check my black box/igniter and my signal generator. The signal generator tested around 120 ohms across the purple and blue wires and I can't seem to get the orange/white and black/white wires going to my igniter to show anything with the ignition and killswitch on. Is that a definite indication of my black box is bad or can I do any more tests? Thanks in advance!Tags: None

No. . . . that does not tell you anything about if your ignotor is good or bad.Last edited by Redman; 11-03-2016, 08:52 PM.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

Black/WHite is the ground wire.
Orange/WHite is the power from the Ignition Fuse thru the kill Switch.
You should be measuring power BETWEEEN the blk/wht (meter negitive lead) and the org/wht (positive lead). SHould be about full battery voltage.
If you dont, try measuring at the ignition fuse (the 3rd fuse, I think).
TO check to see if meter is set up properly, try measuring voltage right across the battery.

I'm confused then I guess. I measured the voltage between the ground black/white and the orange/white on the igniter side of the plug and had nothing. I checked the battery and had just over 12v. Based off the info I found my signal generator is actually a little low as I believe it's supposed to be at 140 to 160. Correct me if I'm wrong. But I should be getting voltage across the my igniter right?

Although, I doubt this is what you meant, but, if you disconnect the plug from the ignitor, you should be checking for voltage on the connector on the bike wiring harness.
You did not say if the starter runs when hit the start button (and hold in clutch). If it does, well that tell us something, because that starter button-solenoid circuit gets its power from the same ignoition fuse & kill switch.
I myslef cant say much about the ohm reading on the signal generator, other than what the manaul says. But would think if completly bad it would read way high (open) or way low (shorted). The ohms being off by a little is certainly less of a suspect of what your problem is than no voltage at the ignoitor. THat cicruit is the same circuit that puts power to the coils.
Where, in general, are you located? Put that in your user profile. Will then show up in every post.Last edited by Redman; 11-04-2016, 06:36 AM.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

Yep. Sorry. I'm checking voltage on the igniter side of the wiring harness use Ike you said and I'm not getting any voltage. It's a 650e with 3 wires going to the signal generator. And ithe the starter will turn over fine with good compression on the motor. Just no spark. I'm located in nowata ok.

The connectors on these critters can be iffy- here's a wiring diagram, print out a copy.
the ignitor gets its positive power downstream of ignition coils, then it waits for signal coils to chime in. Current flowing thru ignition coils is suddenly interupted, just like a contact point system does.

Still working on this. I've done every test I can find and I'm thinking my ignitor/cdi is bad. I'm only getting around 9v through it (it'd think I was checking on the wrong side before) and when I do the test in the manual to get it to spark using a 9v battery I get nothing. So my next question is what are my options for getting a new one. I found one for around $210 but I figure some of you guys may be able to point me in a better direction. Dyna s says they make ignitors for my bike but the LOOK like just the signal generators. Is it an all in one system or am I missing something? Thanks for the help!Last edited by Guest; 02-06-2017, 05:56 PM.

Here is the proper ignitor...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Electro...ZYgOpO&vxp=mtr
Problem is the sellers are A-holes and over charge for shipping and make you pay return shipping if it's bad. 1/2 the price of a Dyna S though.Ed

Selling a grimed up, 30+ year old, NON tested, electric bike part with no warranty or decent return policy is nuts! Screw that. If dyna s is my all in one fix I'm down. I remember reading somewhere about needing a mechanical advance (not sure if that's right) or something on the older gs when you swap to the new ignition. Is that something I need to be looking into also?
