Gs550 burning ignition coils
burning up new coils on my 81 gs550 I've replaced the CDI box, fuse box, spark plugs, and pulsar plate. None of the fuses are blown so I don't know why the could keep blowing it will run for about a day and then I will start it the next and then it dies and loses all spark and coils are fried. So if anyone has any idea or advise to help me out this is my first day using this forum so any help would be much appreciated thanks.Tags: None

If you're destroying coils the first place to look would be the high voltage side of the coil. If you have a huge plug gap then the coil has to work seriously hard to bridge that gap, so it can arc inside the coil rather than across the plug gap. Once the coil starts arcing internally the oil inside it gets burnt, which makes it easier to arc internally.

The current to ignition coils has to pass thru the ignitor box (stock unit was not CDI )Be thankful that you aren't smoking it. Did you measure the primary resistance of these coils? Are they stock or aftermarket? Designed for 12 volts?
go here note step 9 and on

Are you sure that you don't somehow have constant power to the coils even when the ignition switch is turned off? If they stay hot all the time, they will burn up.https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9zH8w8Civs8ejBJWjdvYi1LNTg&resourcekey=0-hlJp0Yc4K_VN9g7Jyy4KQg&authuser=fussbucket_1%40msn.com&usp=drive_fs

Check your charging system to be sure you are not overcharging at high voltage. The 550's R/R ground is very poor and often fails, and when that happens your charging system voltage will spike up to damaging levels. I'm not sure this is happening, but it bears checking.Ed
