But I'm not clear on a few things. Do you need to replace the coils or will the stock ones work? How do you set the timing after the install? (I have an "old School" automotive timing light.) Do they give you detailed instructions w/ the the unit? Lastly, Is the Dyna S a good unit or are their others that will work better ? I had one on a '79 GS1000 I used to own but I had someone install it . Thanks.

Conversion to "Dyna S"
My '78 GS550 still has the "point" (original) ign. system. I've had a lot of problems w/ the points, mostly w/ adjusting them I want to install a Dyna S conversion I've looked at videos on Youtube & it seems easy enough.

The Dyna 5 works will with the stock coils. It's advised to remove the plug caps and snip off 1/2" of wire and screw the caps back on.
There are two types of Dyna S for your bike, depending on the type of advancer unit you have. Be sure to get the proper type. Also check the clearance between the rotor and the ignition cover.
The unit itself is easy to install. Just follow the directions. You can use your ignition light to time the unit.Ed
To measure is to know.

On this subject, it appears Dyna is pretty much the only ignition upgrade (?). Pamco only offered a Kit for the GS a few years which was discontinued. I see Boyer & Bransden in England offers a kit, but doesn't appear easy to source and I have a feeling it may be pricey (will look into further).
Any other upgrades to suggest ?
BTW, appreciate the "Top newbie mistakes" thread. (may use the new ND points/condensor I bought new 20 years ago, never installed and put my$$$ into other maintenance ).

If your bike is running pretty well, go for Dyna electronic ignition. If you have driveability /starting issues, figure out why before you add another variable into the equation...
