Not starting due to bad ignitor? 1982 gs550lz

Hey everyone, yesterday my bike ran fine was going 80 on the highway no problem all day long, this morning the bike would not start no matter what I did. So after poking around the little I noticed the ground wire from my ignitor was loose and not making connection to ground. After tightening it up the bike started up no problem like usual. I made it about a mile or so down the road and the bike stalled out again, and would not start whatsoever.

I took it back home and started by checking all my grounds again and they were good, I tested the signal generator and it seems to be functioning, and I checked continuity between the signal generator and the ignitor, then I check continuity from the ignitor to the left and right coil. I noticed that on the left ignition coil with white and orange wires that I had 10 points 7 volts there on the other ignition coil with the black and orange wire I had like 0.23 something volts there. Cranking the motor over made these numbers jump up and down. I randomly have spark, then no spark and then spark again

The bike is an 82 gs550lz

check coil primary and secondary resistance against values in service manual?

Didn't look in the manual for what the values were, but the resistance on both coils were the same, so its unlikely that botg coils failed at once. Plus i do get spark, just not a consistant spark, like cylinder 1- 4 will have good spark, while 2-3 are dead, and then vice versa. Weird things seem to be happening like that

Follow that ground wire from ignitor and trace it back to make sure it has good ground cpntact with battery negative- don'trely on rusted frame connections.
When this critter was running, did you check voltage output to make sure your r/r was working correctly?

I check continuity with my meter, it seemed good. I cut a new piece of wire and ran the ignitor ground right to the the neg. battery terminal. Then its starts right up, runs for a bit, then stalls again and has no spark

Ill check the r/r next time i can get the motor started, uless theres a way to check without the motor running

When the bike stalls out is there spark on any of the plugs? 1-4 and 2-3 fire together.

When the bike stalls out, ill have no spark anywhere, and then after a couple of cranks, ill hear the motor make a few pops like its trying to start. Then ill have spark at 1 and 4, but not 2 and 3. then after a few more cranks ill have spark at 2 and 3 but not 1 and 4, than all of a sudden have no spark again. if i keep playing with it the motor will start right up and idle fine, then die after 5 minutes

thats whats making me think my igniter box is working intermittently.

Has anyone used those dyna-s igniters that replace the pickups and the box? how well do they work, if my ign box is failing then ill probably replace it with one of those

Hey everyone, new development, when I hook a battery charger up to the bike, and charge it up to full battery where I have 13.8 volts, the bike starts no problem and it will keep running.

When I unplug the charger from the battery volts drop to about 12.5 or so and the bike starts to idle a little rough and then dies out after a few minutes. After it dies out and I tried to restart the bike, the voltage on the battery drops to about 10.8 and the bike won't start, am I looking at a new stator or regulator / rectifier, or both, battery is brand new, unless the battery is way undersized for the bike

I pulled the stator cover off, and the 3 screws that held the stator to the outer cover we're really loose one was basically all the way out and is now bent so it needs to be replaced. Think this was enough to cause a charging issue?
