    79 gs550L rotor removal

    I ordered a new rotor for my bike and will need to remove the old one.

    What tools do I need to pull the rotor?

    Not sure if you can do it on your 550, but on the 450 you can screw in the rear axle with a suitable spacer inside to pop off the rotor.
    Current:
    Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha :eek:)

    Past:
    VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
    And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

      Ebay can be your friend if you let it........................

      Motion Pro makes the tool you need for around $20 shipped or you can get a hardend bolt 16mm with 1.5 thread pitch, but most hardware stores don't have metric bolts that size. http://www.ebay.com/itm/16mm-Puller-...ZyTo1NlrfVtNyQ

      That is not a GS engine in the photo(Kawi I think), but it is the tool you need.

          Now, I have to ask a couple of questions:

          1. What was wrong with your rotor that you felt the need to replace it?

          2. Did you get an "exact replacement" 12-pole rotor?

          3. If you are not sure if it's a 12-pole or 18-pole rotor, be prepared to also get a new stator, if you happened to get an 18-pole unit.

              It's an 18 pole. I ordered a new rotor and stator and just put in my new to me sh775BA. I ordered the rotor off of partzilla and the stator off of eBay. My bike is a 550E but was factory built like an L so it has many L parts on it - like the 18 pole stator and factory R/R not the separate rectifier and regulator like the clymer manual says I should have. Basically the charging system wasn't working, someone told me the 79gs550E needs a 12 pole stator so I ordered one and put it in and got 0V out. Realized it needed the 18 pole stator so ordered one and am awaiting. I was also confused as to why I was only getting 52V out phase to phase out of my existing 18 pole stator when ohm readings seemed fine. Am sick of taking the bike apart and putting back together so hoped if I got the rotor too once parts came in I could put the bike back together and ride it finally. I was thinking maybe I was only getting 52V out phase to phase due to a weakened magnetic field on rotor. I need to get my license by June 18th or I lose my learners and have to go through a graduated licensing systems.

              By the way a have a 12 pole stator if anyone from Canada/out west if looking for a decent deal on one haha.

                    Ohm readings don't mean much - your meter uses a small dc battery to gauge ohms, while the whirring rotor is producing high frequency AC tugging at the stator winding.Your existing stator is likely shorting out on itself producing the low 52 volt reading- likely to be even less when stator is actually delivering current.

                      I think i will will just change the stator first just to see if that fixes the issue before going after the rotor

                        Makes sense, test the new stator after installing and before hooking it up to r/r.
