82 GS850 Vadalized...time to switch to led lights?
This morning my 82 GS850GL was vandalized by someone. The ripped the wires out of my turn signals and tried to removed the fixtures. They are done for, I either have to buy some used ones to replace or go ahead and swap all the lights out for LED fixtures. What say you? Any suggestions?Tags: None

When consulting the magic 8 ball for advice, one must first ask it "will your answers be accurate?"

I bought dual filament lights, I was planning on doing running lights anyway when I redid the fuse box. Gonna put a relay on the top 3 runs and just have the ignition switch control the relay so the power is not runnjng in a 35yo wire run

OK, so I have forced myself now to buy everything to do this modification.
4 dual filament fixtures - running lights
2 Horn relays - not for the coils- I already have that done
1 6 way fuse box
Basically any actual power that goes thru the ignition switch will be eliminated. The ignition switch will only be used to actuate the relays and eliminate the drops in the 35 year old wiring on the key and on/off loop from the battery to the fuse box. power will now go from battery to relay to new fuse box. 1 relay for running lights 1 relay for the other left over. Will have to run a new wire from mid to front and mid to back for the rear and front running lights. No biggie there. In the process I also have an LED Daymaker light off of a wrecked Harley I am putting on for the headlight, if it doesn't work, it was free, I am not overly concerned. So ya, this incident forced my hand for what I was holding off to do until the end of summer. I am pretty sure my charging system will thank me in the end lol.

Have you actually checked to see if there are voltage drops across your wiring or are you adding relays on a suspicion? With all the work you will be doing, it would probably be just as easy to re-wire another harness.Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )
Past:
VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

All sounds like a good plan to me. Probably because that's what I did, too.
Good call on the incandescent bulbs for signals. If you go with LEDs, you will need to add load resistors (which negate the load saving of the LEDs) or change your flasher, which presents other opportunities for creativity. The stock flasher is not only a thermal-based flasher, it also contains circuitry that is part of the auto-cancel system. You will not find another flasher ANYWHERE that has that, so you will need to get creative if you wish to keep your auto-cancel. If you are not worried about auto-cancel, it's a simple process to cut one wire and re-route it.

Yeah, the headlight is not a problem. Good thing you already have the DayMaker light. The ones I have seen were CONSIDERABLY more expensive than the TruckLites that I have gotten.
You have a link to that flasher? I would be interested in seeing that. Would like to see if that might be easier than modifying the harness for an aftermarket flasher so it can use the stock auto-cancel control unit.
