Unlikely to be valve related but regardless, it's critical that the valves are properly adjusted.

If the valves arent the case, then what would likely be the issue here?

You might want to check the newbie mistakes thread linked in my signature to see if anything rings true.

Ok so running through this I just cleaned the carbs, just awaiting a sync once i get the bike running, the bike was put on to pods before i got it, but again ill work with that once the bike is good to sync.
I did not replace the intake boot orings, and i have not yet changed the valves.
I just finished that rebuild on the starter as well as replacing the oil and oil filter.

So basically it just looks like i should replace the intake boot orings and do a valve adjustment.. But you said that the valves would most likely not be it.. and it doesnt seem like orings would cause backfiring?

Did you follow the carb rebuild tutorial when rebuilding the carbs? Fully ungang the carbs, soak in carb dip, reassemble with all new O-rings?

Realize of course that since the bike has pods that it won't run for crap until it's properly rejetted. Do you have a full inventory of all the jets installed right now and have you compared the numbers to those that came in the bike originally?

Doing maintenance is critical. You can't diagnose running problems on a bike that doesn't have all the maintenance up to date.

Yeah the bike has VM carbs so i followed along with the rebuild tutorial that i believe cliff has available. It sounds like it might possibly be the Jets, I looked into them when rebuilding the carbs and they seemed like they would work.. but maybe I didnt give them enough attention.. I will go back and find out which Jets are on the bike at the moment.
